SHENANGO TOWNSHIP

Arson, insurance fraud charges held to court

A Wheatland woman charged with torching her Shenango Township mobile home for the insurance money agreed at her preliminary hearing Friday that, if witnesses were called, police could show a crime occurred and that she might have been involved.

Melissa S. Rhoades, 24, of 79 Laird Ave., agreed to the stipulation on charges of arson and insurance fraud, and District Justice Henry J. Russo, Hermitage, held them for court.

The insurance fraud charge was added just before the hearing, and Assistant District Attorney William Moder said the charges would be consolidated into one case when she is arraigned in Mercer County Common Pleas Court.

Ms. Rhoades, who was represented by Assistant Public Defender Lowell Williams, started a Dec. 26 fire at the mobile home at 92 James St., Oakleaf Estates, by setting a bathroom rug on fire with a lighter, police said.

The blaze caused $10,000 damage to the vacant mobile home, police said.
