TRUMBULL COUNTY

Ohio redistricting plan draws slew of candidates

Ohio's Congressional redistricting plan has a slew of candidates eyeing a run for the 17th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The district, which includes Brookfield and Hubbard, has been dramatically redrawn by state legislators and no longer includes the Poland home of flamboyant, indicted U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr.

Redistricting occurs every 10 years and reflects changes in population identified by the 2000 Census. In Ohio, a lack of growth in comparison to other states will cost one of its 19 seats in the U.S. House.

The state House and Senate approved the plan this week and Gov. Bob Taft signed it into law Thursday.

The 17th district -- which formerly included Mahoning County and most of Trumbull and Columbiana counties -- now lies mostly in Trumbull and Portage counties and parts of Summit and Mahoning counties, including Youngstown and eastern Akron.

The changing of the lines may could mean a changing of the guard for the district.

If Traficant, whose home now lies in the redrawn 6th District, wants to continue his congressional career he'll either have to run in that district or move to the new 17th District.

But other Congressional wannabees are reportedly lining up for the 17th District seat.
