MERCER COUNTY

Only part of 'crime funds' go to county

Mercer County cost collection coordinator and clerk of courts collected $1,283,231 in 2001, but only about a quarter of that total aids the county coffers.

Mercer County Prison Board Monday received the year-end figure on collection of fines, court costs, and restitution. The grand total represents an increase from the $1,066,410 collected in 2000.

Commissioner Olivia M. Lazor noted that of the grand total, $307,626 goes into the county general fund. The county general fund budget totals $18 million this year.

Mrs. Lazor said the public might believe all the money collected from sentenced defendants goes into the county coffers.

Others taking shares of the money collected from sentenced defendants include: restitution to victims of crime, $278,656; the state, $237,559; local municipalities, $59,540; and Intermediate Punishment Program fees, about $193,000, as well as cash bonds and court and clerk of court administrative fees.
