Seniors will meet in new center Monday

Shenango Valley Senior Center, which will open Monday in its new building at 220 N. Buhl Farm Drive, Hermitage, has announced February activities. Floy Moreira is director.

Only standby reservations are being accepted for a bus trip from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 21 to Disney On Ice in Pittsburgh because the bus is filled. The center will be open its regular hours for those not going to the performance.

The center is offering assistance with income-tax, rent-rebate and PACE forms. Call for an appointment.

Other activities include:

  • Friday -- Center closed.

  • Monday -- 8:30 a.m., starting date at new center.

  • Tuesday -- 9 a.m., blood sugar screenings, requiring an overnight or three-hour fast, with Mary Gander, a UPMC Horizon nurse; 9:30 a.m., blood pressure screenings by Rural Metro ambulance personnel and balance exercises with Corie of the Fitness Center of Sharon Regional Health System; 10:30 a.m., singalong with Judy; and 11:30 a.m., center council meeting.

  • Feb. 7 -- 10:45 a.m., discussion group, and 11:15 a.m., consumer update by Nancy Loughry of Mercer County Community Action Agency.

  • Feb. 12 -- 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., catered Mardi Gras celebration with entertainment by Fred Boles and Joe Cann Band.

  • Feb. 13 -- 9:30 a.m., eyeglass cleaning and minor repairs by Shirley Shanes of Keystone Blind Association.

  • Feb. 14 -- 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Valentine's Day and February birthday party.

  • Feb. 18 -- Center closed for Presidents Day.

  • Feb. 19 -- 9:30 a.m., balance exercises and blood pressure screenings; 10:30 a.m., singalong; and 11:30 a.m., "Consumer Fraud Against Older Adults" by lawyer Carolyn Hartle.

  • Feb. 21 -- 10:45 a.m., discussion group.

  • Feb. 25 -- 9:30 a.m., blood pressure screenings by Emmagene Williams.

  • Feb. 26 -- 9:30 a.m., balance exercises, and 10:30 a.m., sing-along.

  • Feb. 28 -- 10:45 a.m., discussion group.

    A daily activity is a puzzle at 9 a.m. Others include:

  • Mondays -- 9:30 a.m., Trotter's game and music therapy with Judy Christ; 11:15 a.m., choral group with Jane Bartholomew. On Monday rehearsal will be at 11:45.

  • Wednesdays -- 9:30 a.m., bingo, and 10:30 a.m., Tai Chi Qigong with Nick Gracenin.

  • Thursday -- 9:30 a.m., lotto.

  • Friday -- 9:30 a.m., bingo, and 11:30 a.m., gentle exercise.

    A daily mini-breakfast from 8:30 to 10 a.m. costs $1, if diners don't stay for lunch.

    Upcoming events include blood sugar screenings, March 5; a St. Patrick's Day party; and computer classes with dates and times to be announced.

    A six-week Senior Health Literacy Program will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning March 20.

    The center is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
