MERCER COUNTY AREA

Strong winds damage power lines

Blustery winds that whipped through the area on Friday caused downed power lines resulting in about 500 Pennsylvania Power Co. customers being without power.

Winds were clocked at 49 mph at the Youngs-town/Warren Regional Airport in Vienna.

Downed and damaged lines were scattered throughout Mercer County, said Randy Coleman, Penn Power's area manager. Most outages reported by late afternoon had been restored.

In Greenville, wind blew down a tree around noon at College Avenue and Main Street, blocking traffic for more than an hour, a Greenville fire department official said.

The official noted the tree also knocked down a traffic light, which took out the rear window of a car parked in a nearby alley.

In Sharon, the wind, with the help of termites, caused a pole to fall at 9:45 a.m. on Connelly Boulevard under the new bridge, blocking traffic for about 20 minutes, according to a Sharon fire department official.

Wires also went down in the city about 10:30 a.m. at East State Street and Sharpsville Avenue, and at 11:40 a.m. on Connelly Boulevard and Walnut Street, the fire department reported, but traffic was not blocked at either site.
