Weed and Seed group gets down to business

SHARON, FARRELL

The Weed and Seed AID team is set, and group members are working on issues for which they would like to develop programs.

The 25-member Assistance for Impact Delegation team has formed six subcommittees, and they will begin holding meetings Wednesday.

Weed and Seed is a state program that takes a two-prong approach to revitalizing a target area. The weed side focuses on law enforcement, and seed efforts are geared to community-building activities.

Farrell and Sharon are in the first year of a three-year Weed and Seed grant.

AID and its sister organization, Target Area Local Leaders, fall under the Seed side of the program.

The AID team is made up of law enforcement officials, public officials and representatives of community organizations, businesses and schools. Their goal is to develop a revitalization plan, said Adrienne Gordon, AID team coordinator.

TALL is more citizen-heavy and will set seed goals.

AID subcommittees have set the following meetings:

  • Housing, chaired by Roberta Leonard of Thiel College, Greenville, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Mercer County Housing Authority office at 90 Jefferson Ave., Sharon.

  • Employment, headed by Farrell Mayor William Morocco, 9 a.m. Friday at the Farrell city building.

  • Recreation, lead by Southwest Mercer County Regional Police Sgt. Riley Smoot, 9 a.m. Monday at the Endorse Resistance of All Substance Abuse Everywhere office, 901 Fruit Ave., Farrell.

  • Education, chaired by Dr. Kimberley Richards of Southwest Gardens Economic Development Corp., Farrell, 8:30 a.m. Feb. 12 at the Southwest office, 500 Darr Ave.

  • Economic development, headed by Mercer County Commissioner Olivia Lazor, 8 a.m. Feb. 14 at the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce office, 41 Chestnut Ave., Sharon.

  • Public safety, led by Mercer County Assistant District Attorney Robert Kochems, 1 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Mercer County Juvenile Probation office in Mercer.

There still are slots available in the TALL team, said team leader Marcia Brown. TALL members will meet at 5 p.m. Feb. 25 at the housing authority community center, 211 Federal St., Farrell.

Public participation is invited at the meetings, but attendees are asked to call ERASE at (724) 981-3856 to make arrangements.

"We want everyone who wants to be involved to be involved," Ms. Cooper said.
