Andrew Russo

Hermitage man was WWII veteran, Westinghouse retiree

A funeral service will be held Thursday for Andrew Russo, 2017 Stafford St., Hermitage. He died at 5:45 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. He was 79.

Mr. Russo was born April 15, 1922, in Farrell to Peter and Mary Cipriano Russo.

A 1940 graduate of Farrell High School, he retired in 1974 with 37 years of service from the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he was an electrical tester.

Mr. Russo was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in the 363rd Infantry Division in the European-African theater of operations.

He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Sharon.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Marie Ulan, whom he married Dec. 11, 1941; one daughter, Karen Russo, Tempe, Ariz.; two sons, Andrew Russo Jr., Fowler; and Robert D. Russo, Hermitage; one brother, Dominick Russo, Placentia, Calif.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Russo was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ralph Russo; and a sister, Kathryn Carr.

Millie A. Staul

Homemaker formerly of Farrell served in church

A funeral service will be held Thursday for Millie A. Staul, Hermitage, formerly of what is now Cordia Commons at the Shenango Inn in Sharon and Hamilton Avenue in Farrell. She passed away unexpectedly at 5 a.m. Monday (2-4-02) in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage, following an extended illness. She was 81.

Mrs. Staul was born April 27, 1920, in Farrell, a daughter of James and Mary Cara.

She attended Farrell schools.

A homemaker, Mrs. Staul dedicated her life to her family and her church. She was a lifelong member of Farrell Christian Assembly, now known as First Assembly of God in Hermitage. As an active member of the church, Mrs. Staul taught Sunday school for more than 50 years and was a member of the Dorcas Fellowship and a leader of the Girls Missionettes. She also supervised and hosted the Happy Timers Youth Bible Study in her home.

Mrs. Staul was active in the community by serving each year at election time at her local precinct.

She was employed by Farrell Area School District and worked at the former Pargny School as a cafeteria and recess supervisor.

Millie also worked in the Produce Department at New Wilmington Food Center, a store owned by her son, John.

She enjoyed sports, singing, doing crafts and baking.

Her husband, John Staul, whom she married Dec. 11, 1937, passed away Dec. 6, 1990.

She is survived by: three sons, John Staul and his wife Nancy, Painesville, Ohio; Robert Staul and his wife Rita, Yorktown, Va.; and Dennis Staul and his wife Andrea, Hermitage; seven grandchildren, Mary Lou Miller, John Patrick Staul, Denise Staul, Brent Staul, Wendy Wyatt, AJ Staul and Cara Staul; and five great-grandchildren, Case Miller, Matthew Staul, Kaitlyn Staul, Bethany Gomez and Patrick Staul.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Staul was preceded in death by one sister, Josephine Chiurazzi; and one brother, Fred Cara.

Dorothy Gahagan Shawgo

Homemaker was golf champ, helped run family tree farm

Dorothy Gahagan Shawgo, 810 N. Broad St. Extension, Grove City, passed away peacefully at 2:50 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, in Beaver Falls following an extended illness. She was 80.

Mrs. Shawgo was born June 23, 1921 in Cleveland to E. Guy Gahagan and Mary Wimer Gahagan.

The lifelong resident of Grove City was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Grove City.

Mrs. Shawgo and her family owned and operated Shawgo's Christmas Tree Farm in Grove City for more than 50 years.

She was a homemaker, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Shawgo loved golf and was the ladies golf champion for 17 years at Grove City Country Club.

Her husband, Willard E. Shawgo, whom she married Nov. 27, 1937, is deceased.

Surviving are her brother, E.G. "Gus" Gahagan, Stoneboro; and her sister, Joan Baker, Hollidaysburg, Pa. She also leaves: her sons and daughters-in-law, John G. and Joan Shawgo, Sewickley, Pa.; and Willard E. Shawgo Jr. and Patti Shawgo, Beaver Falls.

She had five grandchildren and their spouses whom she loved, Douglas and Yvonne Shawgo, Mercer; Gary Shawgo, Newton Falls, Ohio; Michael and Bernadette Shawgo, Clinton, Pa.; Jeffrey and Nancy Shawgo, Pittsburgh; and Priestly and Jennifer Shawgo Williams, Norfolk, Va. Her great-grandchildren, Amber, Ashley, Sydney, Austin, Emily, Sarah, Kelsey, Lauren, Shannon and Miles, were her pride and joy.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Shawgo was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, James Gahagan; and her sisters, Jane Uber and Helen Dickson.

James R. Finnegan

Bell Telephone retiree served two hitches in Army

A memorial service will be held Saturday for James R. Finnegan, 558 Dougherty Ave., Sharon. He died at 2:05 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, after a brief illness. He was 82.

Mr. Finnegan was born July 13, 1919, in New Castle to James R. Finnegan and Ida Lach Finnegan.

He graduated in 1938 from the former Eastbrook High School in Lawrence County.

Mr. Finnegan joined the U.S. Army on March 1, 1939, and was sent to the Panama Canal Zone, where he served in the Coast Artillery for 2½ years. In 1940, he led Fort Randolph to the Atlantic Coast basketball championship and led the league in scoring.

Mr. Finnegan returned home in November 1941 and started to work for Bell Telephone of Sharon as a station installer. After the invasion of Pearl Harbor, he re-enlisted in the Army in January 1942 and served 4½ years.

He was sent to Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Ga., and graduated as a second lieutenant in the infantry. Mr. Finnegan was discharged in December 1945 as an infantry captain. He remained in the reserves after World War II, later achieving the rank of major.

Mr. Finnegan returned to Bell Telephone in Sharon, where he worked for 40 years. The company transferred him to Pittsburgh in 1960, where he worked for the next 25 years before retiring and returning to Sharon.

He was a life member of American Legion Post 299; and Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 103, both Sharon; and belonged to Free and Accepted Masons Plum Creek Lodge 799, Pittsburgh.

Mr. Finnegan was featured in an article on his military achievements and experiences in the Panama Canal published Jan. 16, 2000, in The Herald.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Nancy "Lorraine" Fisher, whom he married Aug. 8, 1947; one daughter, Kim Finnegan and her husband Chuck Longbottom, Philadelphia; and one sister, Betty McKinney, Ocean City, N.J.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, David Finnegan, who was killed in action during the Vietnam conflict.

Charles C. Hamilton

Mason, school director was pharmacist, co-owned stores

A funeral and committal service will be held Friday for Charles C. Hamilton, 27 Dogwood Lane, West Middlesex. He died at 5:45 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. He was 86.

Mr. Hamilton was born May 11, 1915, in Farrell to John A. and Clara A. Canfield Hamilton.

The 1932 graduate of Farrell High School earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy in 1938 from Ohio State University in Columbus, where he was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi-Zeta Chapter.

A pharmacist, he retired in 1985 after 47 years as co-owner of Hamilton Drug Co. in Farrell and West Middlesex. He previously worked for Ormerod Pharmacy in Columbus.

He was a member of West Middlesex United Methodist Church; and Free and Accepted Masons Kedron Lodge 389, also in West Middlesex, where he was a past master, having served in 1956. He was a life member of Zem Zem Shrine, Erie; and Scottish Rites New Castle Consistory.

He was president of the West Middlesex school board during the formation of the jointure with Shenango and Lackawannock townships, and built the first building of the jointure.

As director of First National Bank of Pennsylvania, he started with the West Middlesex branch in 1955.

He was a four--year member of the executive committee of Pennsylvania Pharmaceutical Association and was recipient of the Eagle Scout Award presented by Admiral Byrd in 1930.

He also belonged to Hideaway Country Club in Fort Myers, Fla.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Norma G. Warner, whom he married Jan. 1, 1945, at home; one son, R. Jeffrey Hamilton, Camp Hill, Pa.; and two brothers, William L. Hamilton and Samuel C. Hamilton, both Hermitage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John A. Hamilton; and two sons, John A. Hamilton and David C. Hamilton.

James V. Sirianni

Korean war vet was retired WE welder, lived in Hubbard

A funeral Mass will be held Thursday for James V. Sirianni of 651 Dorchester Drive, Hubbard. He passed away Sunday afternoon, Feb. 3, 2002, in his residence. He was 74.

Born May 9, 1927, in Punxsutawney, Pa., Mr. Sirianni was a son of the late Gabriel and Marie Concetta Chiodo Sirianni.

A 1945 graduate of Farrell High School, he attended Thiel College in Greenville and Youngstown State University. Mr. Sirianni was first employed by the former Jennings Manufacturing of Farrell, and retired in 1983 as a welder for the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean conflict.

Mr. Sirianni was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Hubbard.

Survivors include: the former Joan C. Rumpf, whom he married Dec. 13, 1958; one daughter, Diane Stiftinger, wife of Staff Sgt. Mark Stiftinger, Germany; two sons, Christopher J. Sirianni and his wife Laurien, Coral Springs, Fla.; and Richard V. Sirianni, at home; one sister, Marctella "Marcie" Lufriu, Hermitage; and three grandchildren, Gabriel Sirianni; and Brittany and Morgan Stiftinger.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Sirianni was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Marasco, Jennie Lenzi and Katherine Raykie; and five brothers, Anthony, Charles, Frank, Michael and Peter Sirianni.

Ruth Perrine Whitmore

Sharpsville native formerly of Va. had sister living here

ATLANTA -- Ruth Perrine Whitmore, Roswell, Ga., formerly of Sharpsville, died at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, in Atlanta. She was 84.

Ruth was born Feb. 22, 1917, in Sharpsville to the late William and Emily Smith Perrine.

She was a member of the Roswell Presbyterian Church and a member of the Hampton Roads (Va.) Traffic Club.

She worked 31 years in civil service for the Department of the Defense and, upon retirement, was the budget officer for Fort Belvoir, Va.

Mrs. Whitmore leaves behind: James Whitmore, her husband of 40 years, at home; sons, George A. Cooke, Topsfield, Mass.; and Stephen Cooke, Roswell; a daughter, E. Lorraine Tapia, Brentwood, Tenn.; a sister, Donna Jelley, Sharpsville; four grandsons; three great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.

Fred P. Loviscky

Ex-WE worker in Sharon was active in Greenville baseball

MUNCIE, Ind. -- A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday for Fred P. Loviscky, 2905 N. Winston Drive, Muncie, formerly of Greenville. He died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, in Williamsburg Village Nursing Home. He was 86.

Mr. Loviscky was born June 7, 1915, in Greenville to Frank and Rose Vachon Lovesky.

A graduate of St. Michael's High School in Greenville, he retired in 1975 as a supervisor from Westinghouse Electric Corp. in Muncie, and formerly worked for the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse, having served the company in both sites for a total of 34 years.

Mr. Loviscky was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Muncie and was a past member of St. Michael's Church in Greenville.

He enjoyed sports and from 1954 to 1963 was commissioner for Greenville Little Leagues and Babe Ruth League. He was also general manager of Greenville Merchants baseball team from 1957 to 1960.

An avid hunter, Mr. Loviscky was a deputy game warden in Mercer County from 1955 to 1963.

He also belonged to Knights of Columbus Council 1446 in Greenville.

Surviving are: his wife of 61 years, the former Helen Long, Muncie; one daughter, Mrs. Martin (Ann) Spitz, Brownsburg, Ind.; one son, Charles Loviscky and his wife Barbara, State College, Pa.; five grandchildren, Douglas and Greg Loviscky; and Holly, Tony and Krista Spitz; and three great-grandchildren, Kendall, Andrew and Abigail Loviscky.

Mr. Loviscky was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Frank Lovesky; and two sisters, Josephine Tumpak and Margaret Smith.

Thomas P. Bresnahan

WE retiree formerly of Hermitage was WWII vet

Thomas P. Bresnahan, East Lackawannock Township, formerly of Longview Road in Hermitage, died at 5:15 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, in Countryside Convalescent Home, East Lackawannock Township. He was 79.

Mr. Bresnahan was born Oct. 7, 1922, in Sharpsville to James and Anna Bender Bresnahan.

He retired in 1979 from Westinghouse Electric Corp. where he was a supervisor, having worked at the former Sharon Transformer Division until the plant closed. He was later transferred to the company's site in Muncie, Ind.

Mr. Bresnahan was Catholic by faith.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served in Europe during World War II as a corporal with Troop E of the 116th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squad, Armor Division. Mr. Bresnahan belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166 in Hermitage; and American Legion of the First New York Cavalry in Brooklyn.

His wife, the former Irene "Nene" Hettrick, whom he married April 26, 1968, died Aug. 10, 1991.

Surviving are: a stepson and step-daughter-in-law, Melvin "Bud" and Ivy Hettrick; and stepgranddaughter, Brie Hettrick, all Portage, Ind.; three sisters, Mary Weber and Margaret Hanlan, both Mercer; and Jane Thomas, Hermitage; two brothers, Robert Bresnahan, Hubbard; and William Bresnahan, Sharpsville; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Fred (Evelyn) Witzigman, Hermitage.

Besides his wife, Mr. Bresnahan was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, James and Daniel Bresnahan.
