Churches' Lent series to look at Middle East

A five-week Lenten series of services co-sponsored by Holy Trinity Lutheran and St. Michael's Catholic churches will begin Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Holy Trinity, Penn and Clinton streets. The public is invited.

Theme is "People of Peace: Christian, Jewish and Muslim Responses to Terrorism."

The weekly meetings, with presentations from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., will alternate locations between St. Michael's, 85 N. High Street, and Holy Trinity. Soup, bread and fruit Lenten meal will be served at 5:45 p.m. weekly, with evening prayer from 7:30 to 8 p.m.

  • Feb. 20 -- Historical overview of the development of the three major religions which lay claim to the Middle East territories and the sources of the tensions between them. Location: Holy Trinity, with Dr. Scholl, a professor from Wheeling Jesuit College.

  • Feb. 27 -- Basics Tenets of Judaism, including points of sharing and disagreement with Christianity, and the presenter's reading of the current crisis in the Middle East. Location: St. Michael's, with Rabbi Margo Maynard of Temple Beth Israel in Sharon leading the dialogue.

  • March 6 -- Basic Tenets of Islam including points of sharing and disagreement with Christianity, and the presenter's reading of the current crisis in the Middle East. Location: Holy Trinity, with Dr. Mustansir Mir, professor of Islamic studies, Youngstown State University.

  • March 13 -- Christian Ministry and Witness ongoing in the Middle East, from a Lutheran and ecumenical perspective, and the presenter's reading of the current crisis. Location: St. Michael's, with Pastor Sayid Ala-bouni, ELCA Division for Global Mission Chicago.

  • March 20 -- Peace-making at home: How to more intentionally effect God's will that we be "People of Peace" in our homes, congregations and in this local community. Location: Holy Trinity, with Kathleen Daugherty, director, Lutheran Advocacy Ministry in Pennsylvania.
