SOUTH PYMATUNING TOWNSHIP, SHARON

Man facing assault, trespass, DUI charges

A Sharon man was arrested by two police departments early Saturday after he broke into a man's home, attacked him and fled, police said.

John Straight, 31, of 433 Grant St., was arrested at 3:28 a.m. Saturday by South Pymatuning Township police at state Route 18 and Thomason Road on charges of drunken driving, careless driving and speeding, police said.

Sharon police then picked Straight up on charges of burglary, aggravated and simple assault, criminal mischief, criminal trespass and harassment, they said, noting they were looking for Straight from an incident that occurred at 2:49 a.m.

Police said a 46-year-old resident of the 400 block of North Oakland Avenue told police he was sleeping on his couch when Straight kicked in the front door and began hitting him in the head and face. Straight fled when the victim picked up a large pair of pliers and hit him in the head, police said.

After being charged by Sharon police, Straight was treated at the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System but the victim refused treatment, police said. Straight is reportedly involved in a divorce dispute between the victim and the victim's ex-wife, police said.

He was arraigned before District Justice William L. Fagley, Greenville, and taken to Mercer County Jail after failing to post $20,000 bond.
