Park's Snowflake Series will feature music, 'Snow White'

Buhl Farm park in Hermitage, the site of a successful series of free concerts in the summer, will host a smaller-scale series this winter.

The Snowflake Series of Events will open Sunday with pianist Mickey Natale of New Castle and his group, the Fun Bunch, playing semi-commercial and classic jazz and standards in the activities building.

Carole Dunkerley, activities director at the park, said the series is planned as a "Sunday afternoon diversion."

"I don't know if we'll get five people or 50," she said.

Natale said he's looking forward to kicking off the series. At a July concert, he was greeted by a large, enthusiastic crowd.

"The people up there in Mercer County are unbelievable," he said. "They are fantastic to play for."

Natale will be joined by his brother, Tom, on trumpet, saxophonist Nick Perrotta and Perrotta's nephew, Tony, on drums, and bassist Al White, who has played with Sammy Davis Jr. and Erroll Garner and sang with the Ink Spots.

F.H. Buhl Farm Trust and the Columbia Theatre are presenting the shows.

Following the Fun Bunch's concert, these shows are scheduled:

  • Spirit of the Valley Chorus, a women's barbershop singing group, March 3 in the activities building.

  • Columbia Theatre presents a children's musical version of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Directed by Bill Clary and featuring all local talent, the show will be staged at 7 p.m. March 8 and 2 p.m. March 9, 10, 17 and 18 in the casino.

  • Kalico playing country, April 7 in the casino.

  • Brass Taxi playing jazz April 21 in the casino.

All music concerts start at 3 p.m. and are free, although donations will be taken for Buhl Farm's children's activities.

Tickets, which cost $6 each, for "Snow White" are available at the Columbia office. Call (724) 962-9395.
