GREENVILLE

Council asked to sue over rec complex

Greenville's sports complex project is "up in the air," but some of those steering the project say they intend for it to be completed for use this year.

A Greenville Area Leisure Services Association subcommittee focusing on the project advised borough council to take legal action over problems with contracted work, but no legal action has been taken so far, according to GALSA board members, who met Monday.

"There is no litigation at this time. But that (taking legal action) was a recommendation made to council by our steering committee," said GALSA board member Rich Parks.

The recommendation was based on "deficiencies," such as potentially growing costs and questions over whether specifications have been or will be met, Parks said.

Council alluded to problems surrounding the project during its meeting Thursday and is expected to discuss the project when it meets at 6:30 tonight in the Greenville High School lecture hall.

Councilman Bryan D. Langietti said last week borough officials were scrutinizing numerous change orders requested in the $1.7 million, 42-acre project. The complex along Porter and East Jamestown roads in West Salem Township includes three soccer and three softball fields.

The complex is funded with part of a $2.2 million state capital improvement grant -- also known as the Stadium Fund -- and part of a $3.67 million bond issue.

"The project is up in the air at this time," David P. Henderson, president of the GALSA board and a councilman, said Monday night.

"But it is our intention for the sports complex to be used this year," added GALSA board member Suzanne Paxson.

More kids are registering for youth soccer this year, Parks said. He said a $5 registration fee has had no negative effect.

"There are about 500 kids in this community that play soccer. There is a need for the sports complex. We're looking forward to, hopefully, using the new complex this season," Parks said.
