Joseph J. Ulica
Farrell man, Sharon Steel retiree was active in sports

Joseph J. Ulica, 1020 Webster St., Farrell, died unexpectedly of natural causes at 9:03 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after being stricken at home. He was 91.

Mr. Ulica was born Feb. 6, 1911, in United, Pa., to John and Mary Bernard Ulica.

As an alumnus of Farrell High School Class of 1928, he was a star varsity basketball player for the high school in 1927 and 1928. Mr. Ulica also played and coached in St. Ann Church Basketball League, Farrell, as a youth.

He retired in 1973 after 38 years of service from the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, where he was an electrician.

Mr. Ulica was a member of the Italian Home Club, Farrell; the national AARP, a retired person's organization; and Sharon Steel Retirees Association; the former Shenango Valley Multi-Service Center; and the Slovak and German homes, all Farrell.

He also belonged to St. Ann's Church.

Mr. Ulica coached and managed Jednota baseball teams; and managed the Slovak Home softball team. He also played with the Pirates football team, an independent local team.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Margaret E. Harenchar, whom he married April 5, 1932, at home; one son, Walter J. Ulica, husband of Kay, Bumpass, Va.; two daughters, Sister M. Jean Marie Ulica, Order of St. Francis, San Antonio; and Jean L. Ulica, Farrell; four grandchildren, John, Karen, Michael and Dolly Ulica; and three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Joseph and Leigh Ulica.

Mr. Ulica was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Clara Suchovic, Elizabeth Konnen and Leona Vasconi.

Robert L. 'Red' David

Sharon Steel retiree, WWII vet belonged to ethnic clubs

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday for Robert L. "Red" David of 11 Buckwalter Road, Pulaski. He passed away at 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, after a brief illness. He was 77.

Born April 29, 1924, in Sharon, Mr. David was a son of the late John and Anna Fedor David.

Mr. David attended St. Joseph parochial grade school and Sharon High School.

He retired as a conductor in the transportation department of the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant in 1983, after 42 years of service.

Mr. David was a U.S. Army World War II veteran, having enlisted in 1943. He fought with the 63rd Division, also known as the Blood and Fire Division, in the European theater, serving in Normandy. He eventually toured into Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and for his service, was awarded the Infantry Combat Medal and European Theater ribbons.

Mr. David was a member of Church of the Good Shepherd in West Middlesex; the Sokol Lodge and the Slovak Home, both Farrell; American Legion Post 432, Wheatland; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6233, West Middlesex; and Sharon Steel Retirees Pensioner's Club.

He also enjoyed monthly breakfast meetings with several other retirees from Sharon Steel in various locations throughout the Shenango Valley.

An outdoorsman, Mr. David enjoyed trips to the mountain, hunting and fishing. In his spare time, he could be found bowling or playing cards, particularly pinochle or euchre.

Red and his wife also enjoyed traveling together.

Mr. David will be remembered as a devoted family man who especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include: his wife, the former Valeria Bohach, whom he married Feb. 18, 1950; two sons, Robert J. David and his wife Marsha, Hermitage; and Gary A. David, West Middlesex; one sister, Rose Wasko, Tennessee; a son-in-law, Robert P. Rubano, Farrell; and two grandchildren, Megan Beth David, Hermitage; and Robert M. Rubano, Farrell.

In addition to his parents, Mr. David was preceded in death by one daughter, Renee A. Rubano; one grandson, Trevor John David; and four brothers, John, Clarence, Albert and Ronald David.

Patsy J. Jones

Sharon business school grad formerly was a nurse's aide

YOUNGSTOWN -- A funeral service will be held Friday for Patsy J. Jones, Dandridge Nursing Home, 31 Maranatha Drive, Youngstown, formerly of Masury. She died at 5:45 p.m. Friday (2-8-02) in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Youngs-town. She was 49.

Mrs. Jones was born Sept. 7, 1952, in Georgiana, Ala., to Willie Brooks Jr. and Rilla Mae Williams.

A graduate of Harper High School Class of 1971 on the South Side of Chicago, she was an alumna of Shenango Valley Business Institute, Sharon.

Mrs. Jones was formerly a nurse's aide at O'Brien Memorial Nursing Home in Masury; and John XXIII Home in Hermitage.

She was a former member of Valley Baptist Church in Farrell.

Surviving are: her husband, Josh Jones, whom she married Feb. 20, 1987, Masury; one daughter, Tawana L. Battles, Sharon; four sisters, Dorothy Ann Rose, Florida; and Geraldine Williams, Shirley Diane McNeal and Linda Williams-Evans, all Chicago; one brother, Ricky E. Williams, Chicago; her stepmother, Georgia M. Brooks, Farrell; three stepbrothers, Louis Brooks and Samuel J. Brooks, both Farrell; and Willie Brooks IV, California; seven nephews, four nieces, four great-nephews, six great-nieces; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Randell McQuaters.

Roy L. Mullen

GATX retiree was avid golfer, member of Oak Tree club

A funeral service will be held Wednesday for Roy L. Mullen, formerly of Yankee Run Road, Masury. He passed away at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, in Orange Village Care Center, Masury. He was 90.

Born Oct. 28, 1911 in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Mr. Mullen was a son of the late William and Tillie Collier Mullen.

He was an alumnus of Brookfield High School Class of 1931.

Mr. Mullen retired in 1973 from the store department of General American Transportation Corp.'s former Masury plant after 40 years of service.

An avid golfer, he was a former member of Oak Tree Country Club in Shenango Township; and the GATX Foreman's Club. He also enjoyed bowling and traveling.

Survivors include: his wife of more than 70 years, Esther Mullen, whom he married Nov. 17, 1931; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Darlene) McBride, Brookfield; and Mrs. James (Shirley) Walsh, Hermitage; a brother, Charles Mullen, Kinsman; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Mullen was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Harold, William, Chester, Lester and Narty Mullen; and one sister, Dorothy Wilson.

Stanley M. Janusko

Retired masonry contractor of Farrell was Lions member

Stanley M. Janusko, 2010 Madison Ave., Farrell, died at 7:38 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. He was 80.

Mr. Janusko was born Jan. 19, 1922, in Farrell to Michael and Amelia Ulasz Janusko.

A graduate of Farrell High School Class of 1941, he retired in 1985 after 40 years as a self-employed masonry contractor. Mr. Janusko was previously a delivery person for 15 years for Brookfield Dairy.

He was of the Catholic faith and served during World War II.

Mr. Janusko was a member of Farrell Lions Club; Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage; and enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking.

Surviving are: one sister, Mrs. Robert (Stella) Donley, Farrell; one brother, Edward Janusko, West Middlesex; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mr. Janusko was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Joseph Janusko; and one sister, Ann Miklos.

Mary E. Gurgovits

Ex-Sharpsville homemaker belonged to St. Bart's Church

CLINTON, Md. -- A funeral Mass will be held Thursday for Mary E. Gurgovits, 4102 24th Ave., Temple Hills, Md., formerly of Sharpsville. She died at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, of natural causes in Bradford Oaks Nursing Home. She was 87.

Mrs. Gurgovits was born Oct. 2, 1914, in Yukon, Pa., to Joseph and Rose Yedinak Kuchtik.

A homemaker, she was a member of St. Bartholomew's Church in Sharpsville.

Her husband, John P. Gurgovits, whom she married in April 1939, died May 22, 1975.

Surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Marjorie) Ward, Temple Hills; one grandson, Robert P. Minteer; and four great-grandchildren, Sandra, Rachel, Sarah and Hannah Minteer.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Gurgovits was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Joseph Kuchtik; and three sisters, Elizabeth Weber, Ann Stewitzky and Julia Starinsky.
