City makes plans for its grant money

Street repairs, code enforcement, renewal eyed

Farrell council approved its 2002 Community Development Block Grant application Monday.

The city will receive a total block grant of $380,195, and divvy it up this way:

  • Street and alley repairs, $124,000.

  • Code enforcement, $85,000.

  • Urban renewal, $100,000. The money is part of a $500,000 match council needs to receive a state Capital Budget grant of the same amount for work to make the northwest section of town attractive for light industry.

  • Public services, $29,400.

  • Administration, $55,000.

    These public services will receive money:

  • Shenango Valley Urban League, $7,000 for housing counseling and $5,000 for human relations investigations.

  • Community Food Warehouse of the Shenango Valley, $2,400.

  • Rodent control, $2,000.

  • Farrell Recreation Commission, $10,000. Council has left it up to the commission to decide how much money Mercer County Regional Council of Governments will receive for improvements at the Chestnut Run swim beach in South Pymatuning Township.

  • Prince of Peace Center, Farrell, $2,500 for emergency and family support.

  • Wheels to Work, which gives used cars to people who need transportation to get to work, $500.

    These streets and alleys are pegged for work:

  • Idaho Street from Broadway to Spearman Avenue.

  • Lee Avenue from Roemer Boulevard to Idaho.

  • Fruit Avenue from Kishon Street to Highland Street.

  • The alley that runs between the 1200 block of Roemer and Webster Street, from Stambaugh Avenue to just short of Indiana Avenue.
