Almost two weeks after a brawl broke out at Sharon High School's gymnasium during a basketball game with Farrell, Sharon school directors were talking about increasing school security.

Director Dominick Russo said Wednesday he wants to see increased security at the high school all the time, not just during sporting events. Russo said there could be an incident in the building at any time.

The high school is being renovated and Russo said it's the perfect time to install a security system. He suggested placing security cameras in parts of the school. They could be connected to a monitor and videocassette recorder in the school office.

Current security is "inadequate for this day and age," Russo said. He said the office has one monitor that is hard to see and no one watches it.

Superintendent Richard A. Rossi said all of the outside doors will be wired so cameras can be installed.

"I am looking for top-notch security for today, tomorrow and for when my grandchildren get to high school," Russo said. "We can't afford another incident like we had."

Even though funding is "at a premium," Russo said the state will give districts money for security purposes.

"I will not rest -- and I'll beat it to death -- until we do this," Russo said. "We need to protect ourselves and our students."

Rossi asked board members to volunteer to meet with the architects to talk about more security. Russo, Sandra Siegler-Hoover and Richard Mancino said they would explore security options.

Russo also had another suggestion about seating in the gym area.

Currently, home and visiting adults sit in permanent bleachers on one side of the gym while home and visiting students sit in bleachers on the other side.

The fight that erupted Feb. 2 occurred in the student section. Police said 70 to 100 spectators, mostly youth, attacked police who were trying to break up the fight. Sixteen people were treated at local hospitals.

"Our student body should be seated in the area of the permanent section," Russo said. "Our kids should have the very best seats in the house. I think they deserve it. It's their school."

Russo suggested seating visitors on the opposite side and posting signs to let guests know of the arrangement. He said it will help control things because the students will be separated by the gym floor.
