School director takes issue with Farrell officials' claims

Sharon school Director Richard Mancino took exception to comments made by Farrell city and school officials about security at the Feb. 2 Sharon-Farrell basketball game that ended in a melee.

Mancino said Wednesday he wanted to respond to those critics, in particular Farrell school board member James Guerino.

Guerino Monday complimented Farrell administrators and employees for the way they seat spectators and maintain the aisles, saying those chores are performed "so much better than they were handled at a nearby community recently."

"I think he was taking a slap at us," Mancino said.

Mancino said Sharon had a principal, four board members and a number of teachers at the game who tried to help quell the fight that broke out in the student section of the stands.

Mancino pointed out that the Sharon basketball team cleared the gym floor when the situation escalated, and many adults "did a great job" in helping. "I don't think that they (the Farrell team) can say that about themselves," Mancino said.

Director Linda Valentino echoed Mancino's comments. "Our teachers do truly care about our student body," she said.

Mancino also commended policemen from all area departments for their assistance with the brawl. "I think they did a heck of a job. It could have gotten much worse."

Mancino also took a jab at Farrell Councilman and teacher Louis Falconi who a few days after the incident criticized the police and called some of their actions "inappropriate."

Falconi, who was not at the game, said Farrell students claimed police used excessive force against them.

Mancino said school officials should tell their students to stay out of the way of police trying to do their job. "I think a responsible educator and administrator would be saying that to their students," he said.

Mancino also mentioned another fight between Farrell and Aliquippa students that occurred several years ago in Farrell.

"Even with good security things happen," Mancino said.
