Board bans parking on stretch near school

Parents, faculty and students at Sharon High School are going to see a parking change starting today.

Directors decided Wednesday to prohibit parking on the extension of North Myers Avenue that runs in front of the school between Linden and East State streets.

Cars park on both sides of the street, and Director Kathy Hall said she has even seen cars double-parked. There is hardly enough room for a large car to pass, let alone a fire truck or ambulance, she said.

Director Pamela Corini said she talked with Fire Chief Arthur A. Scarmack Jr. and Police Chief Thomas Burke because they had concerns about emergency vehicles on the stretch of road.

The chiefs recommended banning parking there and the directors agreed.

Superintendent Richard A. Rossi said barriers will be placed along the road at least until the "No Parking" signs can be installed.

Mrs. Corini added no buses should be allowed to park in the driveway and asked administrators to inform the bus companies.

A gate at the north end of the school property along North Myers near Linden will be closed most of the day.

Rossi also suggested hiring a part-time security guard, at least for awhile, to man the section of road after school to make sure motorists don't park there.

Mrs. Corini said parents who normally park there to pick up their children from school will have to make arrangements to meet in the parking lot.

Directors said they will explore other parking alternatives to help ease the situation.
