Youth won't eat but will aid others
More than 30 participants of Zion's Reformed Church Junior/Senior High youth group will play the roles of "hunger survivors" in observance of the annual World Vision 30 Hour Famine.
Activities will include a community food drive on Feb. 23 and a spaghetti dinner fund-raiser on Feb. 24.
Participants seek pledges from sponsors as they go without food for 30 hours. During that time, they will take part in "Survivor"-themed games, local community service projects, and watch a video about hunger.
Guest speakers also will participate, including Dr. Victor Colaiaco, who will talk about the physical aspects of fasting and starvation; Susan Franklin, director of Good Shepherd Center, who will talk about needs within the local community; and the Rev. Philip Garner, host pastor, who will talk about the spiritual aspects of fasting and helping.
The community food drive will be from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 23. All non-perishable food items and supplies will be donated to Good Shepherd.
Concluding the observance will be the spaghetti dinner at Hilltop Restaurant from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 24. Advance tickets can be purchased by calling the church office at (724) 588-6940 or, in the evenings, at (724) 475-3502.
Collected funds will be donated locally as well as for emergency relief and long-term development projects in Afghanistan, Tanzania, Peru and the United States.
Anyone interest in participating or donating should call Robin Reimold, Zion's youth director, (724) 475-3502; or World Vision, 1 (800) 7-FAMINE; website: www.30hourfamine.org.
