Will attend luncheon for Daffodil Days

Pennsylvania's first lady, Kathy Schweiker, and Dr. Robert Muscalus, state physician general, will be the guests of honor at the American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days campaign luncheon on Thursday.

The luncheon will be held at noon at the Normandy Banquet Center at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hickory Post 6166 on East State Street.

The Daffodil Days campaign began Feb. 1 and continues until March 23.

"The Daffodil Days Committee is looking forward to Mrs. Schweiker's visit," said Mercer County Commissioner Olivia M. Lazor, 2002 Daffodil Days campaign chairman. "We know she is deeply committed to the American Cancer Society and to Daffodil Days."

On Oct. 5, Mrs. Schweiker became the 42nd first lady of Pennsylvania when her husband, Mark Schweiker, was sworn in as the 44th governor.

Mrs. Schweiker has served as honorary chair of the American Cancer Society's annual Daffodil Days celebration for the past three years.

Muscalus has been serving as Pennsylvania's Physician General since March 1999. He is the principle adviser to the governor and the secretary of health on public health and public policy issues.

As the first flower of spring, the daffodil is the perennial American Cancer Society symbol of hope for cancer patients throughout the community. The Daffodil Days fund-raiser, which historically coincides with the coming of spring, is expected to raise $25,000 in Mercer County and more than $3.2 million in Pennsylvania.

"I'm looking forward to this being the biggest Daffodil Days ever in Mercer County," Mrs. Lazor said. "Our goal is to raise money for a cure for cancer. It's a tremendous responsibility, but the Daffodil Days committee is confident that we can attain our goal."

Other members of the committee include Catherine V. Mott, chief executive officer of Strategic Sales Solutions; Ann Coleman, Association for Retarded Citizens of Mercer County; the Rev. Donald Wilson, pastor of Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Lackawannock Township; Dr. and Mrs. Lon Voisey; Carol Gurrera, a Hermitage School District administrator; Dr. George Garrow, Sharon Regional Health System's Cancer Care Center medical director; and Sue Stevenson.

The luncheon is open to the public. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the American Cancer Society office at (724) 346-3529. Daffodils can also be ordered at this number.
