MERCER COUNTY AREA

Educational service unit seeks local budget approvals

Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV in Grove City is proposing a general operating budget of $4,455,099 for the 2002-03 school year.

School boards of the 27 districts Unit IV serves in Mercer, Lawrence and Butler counties are considering the budget, a news release from the IU said.

The unit provides arts and education projects, an arts program for special needs students, publication services, educational planning, continuing education programs and other needs to the districts.

The revenue to support the budget is derived from three sources: state subsidy, local school district contribution and other sources.

School districts provide $649,135 for the budget -- an amount that has not increased since 1991-92, according to Unit IV figures.

The estimated district contributions for local schools, with last year's figures in parantheses, are:

  • Commodore Perry, $5,566 ($5,606)

  • Farrell, $6,051 ($6,877)

  • Greenville, $15,722 ($16,207)

  • Grove City, $25,897 ($25,636)

  • Hermitage, $37,016 ($36,771)

  • Jamestown, $7,461 ($7,541)

  • Mercer, $15,597 ($15,574)

  • Reynolds, $12,320 ($12,485)

  • Sharon, $14,251 ($14,781)

  • Sharpsville, $10,702 ($10,965)

  • West Middlesex, $12,109 ($12,266)

  • Wilmington, $16,653 ($16,471)

The general operating budget increased from the 2001-02 budget of $4.1 million.

The budget contains $1 million to provide services for 500 students in cyber charter school and the unit's cyber service program, which is up 200 students from 2001-02, budget information said.

Unit IV does not expect an increase in state subsidy from this year's $251,698, according to budget information.
