PENNSYLVANIA 8TH DISTRICT

Stevenson to seek 2nd term; Dem plans to challenge him

State Rep. Dick Stevenson, Grove City, R-8th District, announced this week he is seeking a second term in Harrisburg.

Stevenson said he adjusted quickly to state lawmaking during his first two years in office.

"While the legislative process does take a while to get used to, I think my previous experience as a (Mercer) county commissioner and in business prepared me well for the experience," Stevenson said.

"I feel comfortable in my role. I consider it an honor to represent the people of the 8th District and can think of no higher calling," Stevenson said.

Stevenson serves on four House committees: Commerce and Economic Development, Environmental Resources and Energy, Aging and Intergovernmental Affairs.

Stevenson said he has fought for business and development initiatives as a member of the Commerce and Economic Development Committee. "As a business owner, former chairman of Penn-Northwest Development Corp. and president of Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce, I believe the best way to create jobs is to allow businesses to keep more of what they earn," Stevenson said.

Stevenson also chairs the Mining Subcommittee and is a member of the Firefighters and Emergency Services Caucus.

To date, no Republicans have come forward to oppose Stevenson in the primary.

Stevenson, however, is likely to face Democratic opposition this fall.

Butler County Democrat Mark Lauer, a volunteer fire chief and township administrator, has announced he is seeking his party's nomination this spring.

Stevenson, 57, and his wife live in Grove City and have two children. He is a graduate of St. Francis College, Loretto, Pa., and holds a master's degree in business from Suffolk University, Boston. He is an Air Force veteran who is involved in numerous community and civic activities as well as being a real estate agent and a member of the Rotary Club and the National Rifle Association.
