FARRELL
Conviction nets city man federal time
A Farrell man who pleaded guilty to a federal drug charge was taken immediately following his sentencing Monday to begin a prison term.
Darwin O. Crumby, 36, of 932 Hamilton Ave., Farrell, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Dan Polster, Cleveland, to 6 1/2 years in prison, followed by 10 years' supervised release, a spokeswoman for Polster's office said.
Crumby pleaded guilty in August to a charge of conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine.
Crumby was indicted May 16. He had been in custody since April 26, the day of a search of his home, and held on a complaint filed in U.S. Magistrate's Court, Youngstown.
The indictment took precedence over the complaint.
Crumby and others distributed at least 50 grams of crack in Pennsylvania and Ohio from February 2000 up to the date of his arrest, according to the indictment.
In the search of Crumby's house, 139.3 grams of crack were found.
According to recent police investigations of Farrell's crack trade, the drug is sold in rocks weighing about one-fifth of an gram for $20 a rock.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert E. Bulford, who called the sentence "appropriate under the circumstances," said he could not comment on whether anyone else has been or would be charged in the investigation.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
