John F. Kahl Jr. Sharon native had been self-employed as landscaper John F. Kahl Jr., 54, of Cliffside Park, N.J., died Feb. 1, 2002, in Palisades General Hospital, Palisades Park, N.J. He was born Sept. 22, 1947, in Sharon to John F. Kahl Sr. and Jean Snyderwine Kahl. Mr. Kahl was self-employed as a landscaper for many years. Surviving are: his father and stepmother, Leona Kahl, Bethlehem, Pa.; two brothers, Jeffery M. Kahl, New York City; and Keith F. Kahl, Catasauqua, Pa.; three sisters, Carol A. Stupak, Center Valley, Pa.; Judy L. Kahl, Malvern, Pa.; and Karen Kahl, Baltimore; and nieces and nephews. His mother preceded him in death.
KAHL Dorothy 'Dot' A. Thomas Sharpsville schools retiree lived in South Pymatuning A funeral service will be held Wednesday for Dorothy "Dot" A. Thomas, Seneca Road, South Pymatuning Township. She died Monday morning, Feb. 25, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 73. Mrs. Thomas was born Nov. 10, 1928, in Farrell to Richard A. and Bertha E. Grube Garver. She graduated from Sharpsville High School in 1946 and married Walter J. "Spike" Thomas on Feb. 21, 1957. Mrs. Thomas was employed by the Sharpsville School District for many years and retired in 1996. She was a member of Orangeville United Methodist Church; the United Methodist Women; Sharpsville Area School District Retirees; and AARP, a retired person's organization. Mrs. Thomas is survived by: her daughter, Marilyn Thomas, Sharpsville; three brothers, Art and Bob Garver, both Sharpsville; and Sam Garver, Littleton, Colo.; and three sisters, Mrs. Dan (Jane) Parsons, Twinsburg, Ohio; E. Josephine Langdon, Lake Forest, Calif.; and E. Ann McMullen, Euclid, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 19 Jefferson Ave., Sharon 16146.
THOMAS Carl E. Splitstone Hermitage man was WWII POW, retired truck driver A funeral service will be held Thursday for Carl E. Splitstone, 184 Lyle Drive, Hermitage. He died at 11:40 p.m. Sunday (2-24-02) in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage, after an extended illness. He was 77. Mr. Splitstone was born July 14, 1924, in Sharpsville to George and Elizabeth Shollenberger Splitstone. He attended Hickory High School in Hermitage and worked for Williams Brothers Trucking of Wheatland as a truck driver for 35 years. He retired in 1985. Mr. Splitstone was a member of First Assembly of God in Hermitage. An Army veteran, he served during World War II and was a prisoner-of-war. He was a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599 in Reynolds; and American Legion Post 160 in Farrell. Mr. Splitstone enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening and the outdoors. His first wife, the former Jenny Caputo, died in 1976. His second wife, the former Iva J. Clinger, whom he married July 29, 1978, died July 3, 2000. Surviving are: four daughters, Donna McConnell, Masury; Mrs. James (Linda) Clary; and Sheri Urey, wife of Richard Urey Jr., all Hermitage; and Sandra Clinger, Canfield, Ohio; a son, Gerald A. Splitstone and his wife Becky, Jamestown; a sister, Mrs. Thomas (Audrene) Hoovler, West Middlesex; two brothers, William Splitstone and his wife Mary, West Middlesex; and George Splitstone, Connecticut; 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Besides his first and second wives, Mr. Splitstone was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Michaels and Marie Splitstone. Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of First Assembly of God, 1455 N. Keel Ridge Road, Hermitage 16148.
