Inmate, 62, dies of apparent heart attack in state prison

Superintendent Gilbert A. Walters reported the death of an inmate at the State Regional Correctional Facility, 801 Butler Pike.

William Gary Troutner, 62, suffered an apparent heart attack Tuesday. Walters said corrections officers and medical staff provided immediate emergency first aid before Troutner was taken by ambulance to United Community Hospital in Pine Township, where the emergency room physician pronounced him dead.

Consistent with Department of Corrections' policy, institutional staff had notified the Pennsylvania State Police and the Mercer County Coroner to determine the official cause of death.

Troutner had been at the prison since 1997 serving a 5-to-15-year sentence for involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and statutory rape on a 1996 Crawford County conviction. Institution staff has notified the inmate's next of kin.
