Felbaum sentenced for castration death
BUTLER (AP) -- A transsexual woman was sentenced Wednesday to up to 11 years in prison for performing a crude castration on her husband, who later died from the procedure.
Tammy Felbaum, 43, was sentenced to 5 1/2 to 11 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault in her husband's death. The sentence comes almost a year to the day after James Felbaum was found in a filthy Marion Township trailer home that contained a makeshift operating room.
"I loved my husband. I don't deserve this," Felbaum said before her sentencing.
Prosecutors said James Felbaum, 40, Tammy's sixth husband, died from a combination of the pain of a castration performed by Tammy Felbaum and the effects of the painkiller OxyContin, choking on his own vomit.
Relatives testified Felbaum had repeatedly threatened to castrate her husband if he ever cheated on her. An ex-husband also testified during the trial that Felbaum had helped perform a similar operation on him in 1983.
During the December trial, Felbaum testified she castrated herself two decades ago, and that her husband performed a similar operation himself.
Felbaum was also found guilty in December of reckless endangerment and unauthorized practice of medicine, but did not receive any prison time on those charges.
