A Farrell man wanted by Southwest Mercer County Regional police for questioning about his possible role in a drive-by shooting led four police departments on a seven-mile chase this morning, police said.

The chase started in Sharon and ended in Wheatland with a police road block, Sharon police said.

The chase began at 2:01 a.m. when police tried to pull over a sport utility vehicle driven by Dwayne Montel Smith, 27, of 906 Hamilton Ave., Farrell, police said. Smith was wanted on a warrant from Pennsylvania Probation and Parole, police said.

Sharon police gave the following account of the chase, which involved departments from Sharon, Southwest Regional Mercer County, Hermitage and Shenango Township:

Smith's SUV was spotted in the 500 block of Fourth Avenue, and police tried to stop it at McCleery Street and Hall Avenue. Smith sped through several stop signs on Hall.

Smith drove from Hall east on Thornton Avenue, south on Forker Boulevard and across Highland Road and East State Street to Service Avenue. The chase then proceeded east on Glenwood Drive, south on Smith Avenue and across Connelly Boulevard to Pine Hollow Boulevard in Hermitage.

The chase then went from Pine Hollow to Mercer Avenue and across Sharon-New Castle Road in Farrell to Farrell Terrace. The pursuit went west on Washington Street, south on Beechwood Avenue, west on Stevenson Street and south on Wallis Avenue.

Smith drove around a cement road block in Steel City Terrace and across a storm drain to Broadway where he headed back toward Sharon. He encountered more police and turned into a vacant lot where he hit the guide wire of a utility pole and knocked the transformer down.

Smith got back on Broadway where he headed toward Wheatland.

He was met by a police roadblock on Broadway Avenue at Adams Street in Wheatland. By that time Smith had a flat tire and stopped.

The chase lasted about 11 minutes and no one was injured, police said.

Sharon police charged Smith with fleeing and eluding police, resisting arrest, recklessly endangering another person, and a number of traffic citations. Southwest charged him with reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Smith was arraigned this morning before District Justice Henry J. Russo, Hermitage. He was taken to Mercer County Jail on $2,500 bond and a parole detainer.

Southwest have been seeking Smith to question him about a Feb. 19 drive-by shooting in the 200 block of Roemer Boulevard, Farrell, police said.

Smith was with Lamar Wilder, who is believed to live in Farrell, when Wilder had a confrontation with Donnell T. "Deacon" Stubbs, 20, of Warren, Ohio, in the 900 block of Negley Street, Farrell, police said.

Stubbs and Wilder argued over a girl and either Smith or Wilder pulled a gun, police said.

Stubbs held a gun to Wilder's face and punched him in the mouth, police said.

Wilder and Smith drove off and Stubbs got into a car with Brian E. Miller, 21, and Terrell A. "Styles" Myrick, both of Warren, and three Sharon females, an 18-year-old woman and two girls, aged 15 and 17, police said.

The men spotted each other in the 200 block of Roemer and Stubbs fired several shots at the Smith-Wilder vehicle, police said.

It's possible that shots also were fired from the Smith-Wilder vehicle, police said.

After the shooting, two of the females jumped from the car, but a girl could not because Miller held her leg, police said. She was able to break free after kicking him in the face, police said.

The females ran to the police station, police said.

Based on their description of the car, Sharon stopped the Stubbs-Myrick-Miller car at 12:37 a.m. in the 300 block of South Dock Street.

Stubbs was charged with two counts of attempted homicide, four counts of aggravated assault, five counts of reckless endangerment and one count of carrying a firearm without a license.

Myrick faces charges of two counts of conspiracy to commit homicide, four counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, five counts of conspiracy to commit reckless endangerment and one count of carrying a firearm without a license.

Miller was charged with unlawful restraint and tampering with evidence.

Stubbs and Myrick were taken to Mercer County Jail after failing to post $50,000 bond, and Miller after failing to post $25,000 bond.

Their preliminary hearings are set for 2:30 p.m. Friday before Russo.
