NEW CASTLE

New Castle Summit set for September

When the third International New Castle Summit of the World convenes in September, it will not be in a major United States city or exotic locale. Instead, delegates from eight countries will travel to one city in Pennsylvania and another in Indiana.

The U.S. Summit is the third meeting of the New Castle Network of Cities. Previous summits were in 1998 in Shinshiro, Japan; and 2000 in Neuchatel, Switzerland.

Current network participants are Neufchateu, France; Neuburg an der Donau, Germany; Shinshiro; Newcastle, South Africa; Neuchatel; Newcastle-under-Lyme, United Kingdom; New Castle Indiana; New Castle; and Newcastle Australia.

Prospective members invited to attend this year are Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, United Kingdom; Newcastle On Clun, England; Newcastle Co. Down, Northern Ireland; Newcastle Emly and Newcastle Monmouth, both Wales; Newcastle Galway, Newcastle West and Newcastle Wicklow, all Republic of Ireland; Newcastle Jamaica; Newcastle Island and Newcastle Ontario, both Canada; Newcastleon, Scotland; Newcastle Nevis, Sktkitt & Nevis; and Newcastle Range, Australia.

The United States New Castles are in Wyoming, Delaware, Maine, Colorado, Washington, Oklahoma, New Hampshire and Kentucky. There are about 35 New Castles in the United States alone.

The first summit focused on exchange of ideas in economic development wit the second focusing on culture, education and tourism.

A symposium on environmental recycling initiatives and introducing new innovative environmental technology from Pennsylvania based companies for the Pennsylvania portion are planned.

The summit's purpose is to build worldwide community partnerships, strengthen international relations, initiate product exchanges and promote tourism.
