Bubblegum hitmaker tops bill at Shoe Our Children concert

The voice behind the cartoon band the Archies -- Ron Dante -- will pour some "Sugar Sugar" at the Shoe Our Children concert March 13 at Tiffany's, Brookfield.

The Shangri-Las and Andy Kim also will sing.

The band version of the Archies was created by Don Kirshner after the success of the animated television show. While Ray Stevens and Ellie Greenwich contributed to the group, which only recorded and did not play live, Dante was the only musician to appear on all the songs credited to the Archies.

The Archies' biggest hit was "Sugar Sugar" -- written by Kim and Jeff Barry -- in 1969, but also hit the charts with "Bang Shang A Lang," "Feeling So Good," "Jingle Jangle," "Who's Your Baby?" and "Sunshine" in 1968-70.

Dante previously had hits overdubbing his voice and releasing records as the Detergents on "Leader of the Laundromat" -- a parody of the Shangri-La's "Leader of the Pack" -- and the Cuff Links on "Tracy."

Dante also produced many of Barry Manilow's hits in the '70s.

The Shangri-Las were made up of sisters Mary and Betty Weiss and twins Mary Anne and Marge Ganser.

The group rode the girl-group craze to hits between 1964-66, such as "Remember (Walkin' in the Sand)," "Give Him a Great Big Kiss," "Maybe," and "Out in the Streets."

"Leader of the Pack" was written by Barry and Ms. Greenwich.

Kim signed to Barry's Steed record label, collaborated with Barry in writing a series of hits and re-recorded earlier Barry hits. He made the charts with "How'd We Ever Get This Way," "Shoot 'Em Up Baby," "Rainbow Ride" and "So Good Together" in the late '60s and early '70s.

After leaving Steed, Kim had his biggest hit, "Rock Me Gently," in 1974.

The concert raises money for the Shenango Valley Foundation's program to buy shoes for children in preschool through 12th grade who qualify for free and reduced lunches in Mercer County and Brookfield.

The event will open with dinner at 5:30 p.m. The winner of the Shenango Valley Foundation's Humanitarian Award will be honored at 7:30 p.m.

The music starts at 8 p.m.

Tickets: at the Shenango Valley Foundation, (724) 981-5882, or the fourth floor of the Winner building, (724) 981-1152. Both buildings are in Sharon.
