MERCER COUNTY

Food bank eyes matching funds

For the fourth year, Community Food Warehouse is hoping a successful challenge grant will raise a few more dollars for its efforts to feed Mercer County families.

The warehouse plans to participate in the Alan Shawn Feinstein Foundation's offer of $1 million for non-profit agencies that fight hunger.

The foundation, based in Cranston, R.I., will match check and cash donations the non-profits receive in March and April in response to the challenge.

When the total raised passes $1 million nationally -- it always does -- the money will be divided proportionately among agencies that qualify.

Community Food Warehouse raised $5,500 during the challenge grant period last year, and the foundation sent it $238.

It received $269 on $4,469 in donations in 2000, and $280 on $11,600 in 1999.

The warehouse is coming off a successful holiday annual fund-raiser. It collected $35,344, exceeding the goal of $32,000.

Other agencies, such as Grace Food Pantry in Grove City and Lakeview Helping Hands, Stoneboro, also have received Feinstein money in the past.

Over the last five years, Feinstein offers have raised $120 million for 2,000 agencies.

Feinstein is the founder of the Center for a Hunger Free America at the University of Rhode Island and the Feinstein International Famine Center at Tufts University, Boston.
