HERMITAGE

Five agencies to share in $41,000 block grant

Five out of a dozen agencies that made requests to Hermitage commissioners last month will receive a cut of a $41,000 Community Development Block Grant.

The Children's Center of Mercer County will receive almost half of the public services portion amount of the CDBG grant -- $20,000 -- to support their existing family center that is housed in Artman Elementary School.

"The program works throughout the city in terms of coordinating and referrals and tutoring to help those less fortunate families," said executive director James Myhra, who said plans for the family center were still "evolving."

The agency had not requested grant money previously, according to city manager Gary Hinkson.

Other agencies that received money are:

  • Prince of Peace Center in Farrell -- $7,500.

  • AW/ARE, Inc., the county's domestic violence and rape crisis agency -- $6,000.

  • Mercer County Regional Council of Governments -- $5,000.

  • Mercer County Housing Coalition -- $2,500.
