EAST LACKAWANNOCK TOWNSHIP

2 are killed in I-80 crash

Two people were killed this morning in an accident on Interstate 80 in East Lackawannack Township, state police said.

Just before 8 a.m. an eastbound car spun out of control and another driver stopped and got out of his vehicle to try to help, police said. Then two tractor-trailers came around a curve, lost control and jackknifed, police said.

One of the trucks hit the car that had spun and the man who had stopped to help, police said. A woman in the car and the "good Samaritan" were killed, police said.

State police, Mercer East End Volunteer Fire Department and ambulances were at the scene, a Mercer County 911 supervisor said. Pine Township Volunteer Fire Department also assisted a hazardous materials team in cleaning up spilled fuel, the supervisor said.

One eastbound lane of I-80 was closed. Emergency personnel were still working several hours after the crash, the supervisor said.
