MERCER COUNTY

Authority has money, taking recycling applications

Mercer County Solid Waste Authority has $30,000 to fund recycling projects and three applications waiting for approval.

The following three projects will be considered for approval at a meeting Thursday in Mercer County Planning Commission's offices at 2491 Highland Road, Hermitage:

  • George Junior Republic in Pine Township has requested a continuation of funding to pay for recycling bins purchased through last year's program.

  • The City of Hermitage is seeking to increase its number of tire recycling days to three. The city collected tires twice last year.

  • Wilmington Township has Saturday dropoff days for recycling. The township also will use funding to pay its quarter of the cost for a truck funded by Department of Environmental Protection. The money will go toward operating expenses for the truck used by four Lawrence County townships.

The authority will take applications for project funding until Oct. 1.

"We anticipate pretty much the same applicants as previous years," said Don Blakesley, Mercer County recycling coordinator.

"We gave applications to every municipality and school, both public and private," he said. "Other groups also can apply."

The authority's grant program provides funding to municipalities, institutions and nonprofit organizations located in Mercer County.

The authority gave out $15,500 last year. The money paid for Saturday cleanup days in Lackawannock, Jackson, French Creek, Liberty and Springfield townships.

The money also bought recycling bins for Mercer County 4-H Park and George Junior Republic, Pine Township, and paid for magazine recycling dropoff days in Sharon and Earth Day activities at West Hill Elementary School, Sharon.

The authority also sponsors the annual Recycling Poster Contest and Illusion Marker Recycling Shows for kindergartners through sixth-graders. Saturday recycling dropoff programs are funded by the authority.

The Solid Waste Authority is made up of elected officials representing townships, boroughs, cities and citizens from around the county.
