MERCER COUNTY

State reps face primary challengers

HARRISBURG -- It doesn't look like veteran Republican lawmakers U.S. Rep. Phil English and state Rep. Rod Wilt will face any major party opposition for re-election this year.

Others aren't so lucky, according to unofficial candidate lists released Tuesday by the state Election Bureau.

Several lawmakers representing the county face challengers from within the party in the May 21 primary and from the opposing party in the fall.

Candidates for offices ranging from governor to state House faced a deadline to file nominating petitions to run in the May 21 primary.

State Rep. Michael C. Gruitza, Hermitage, D-7th District, faces a primary challenge from Hermitage School Board member James Lumpp, who switched his voter registration from Republican to Democrat for the race.

A GOP primary battle is shaping up for the 8th District House seat held by Republican Rep. Dick Stevenson, Grove City. As he seeks a second term, Stevenson faces a challenge for renomination from Republicans Mark Laurer, Butler, and Stevie Mick, Zelienople. No Democrats filed in that race.

State Sen. Robert D. "Bob" Robbins, Salem Township, R-50th District, faces a challenge this fall from Democrat Kyle Klaric of Hermitage, a local business owner. The 50th District encompasses all of Mercer County. Wilt, Sugar Grove Township, is apparently unopposed for a fourth term.

On the congressional front, redistricting has split Mercer County between two districts. Most of the county remains in English's renumbered 3rd District, but Farrell, West Middlesex, Shenango Township and a sliver of Hermitage were added to the 4th District, now represented by Republican Rep. Melissa Hart of Bradford Woods.

Two Democratic candidates are competing for their party's nomination to challenge Hart, a former state senator seeking a second term.
