Helen Ann Olenik David
Good Shepherd member was wife of former local excavator

Helen Ann Olenik David of Lakeview Drive in Lackawannock Township passed away unexpectedly at 4:40 p.m. Tuesday (3-12-02) in the intensive care unit of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 86.

Mrs. David was born Aug. 25, 1915, in Youngstown, a daughter of Michael and Anna Sedlak Olenik.

She was an alumna of Sts. Cyril and Methodius School and Rayen High School, both Youngstown.

Before her marriage, Mrs. David worked in the dietary department of the former Southside Hospital in Youngstown.

She was a housewife and loving mother who raised six beautiful children.

She was also a member of Church of the Good Shepherd in West Middlesex and belonged to their Altar Rosary Society and Prayer Chain.

Mrs. David enjoyed baking, crocheting, reading, traveling and visiting with her grandchildren.

Her husband, Joseph J. David Jr., a former local excavator in the Shenango Valley whom she married Sept. 16, 1939, died Feb. 15, 1981.

Surviving are: two daughters, Barbara Urban and her husband John, Sharpsville; and Carol Ann Carson, Levittown, Pa.; four sons, Joseph David III, Sharon; Francis J. David and his wife Katherine, West Middlesex; Steve David and his wife Darlene, Yardley, Pa.; and James David and his wife Judith, Grove City.

She also leaves 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren, whom she dearly loved.

Mrs. David was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Mary Hospodar, Katherine Olenik, Anna Olenik and Agnes Stevens; and two brothers, Stephen Olenik and Michael Olenik.

Bernice J. Parker

Sharon woman worked at restaurants in Masury

Bernice J. Parker of 210 Pearrell Drive, Sharon, died at 11:25 a.m. Monday (3-11-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 70.

Mrs. Parker was born Dec. 4, 1931, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of William and Grace Finkbeiner Glover.

She was a cook at Margaritas restaurant in Masury for 14 years and had also been employed for 18 years at the former Schuster's restaurant in Masury.

Her husband, Howard L. Parker, whom she married April 16, 1956, died Aug. 24, 1986.

Survivors include: her mother, Grace Mullins, Phoenix; two sons, Robert Parker, Farrell; and Howard "Scooter" Parker, Sharon; one daughter, Tracy Myers, Reynolds; one sister, Leslie Tye, Phoenix; one brother, Darryl Mullins, Flagstaff, Ariz.; and nine grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by her father.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

John Kenneth Urey

Reznor retiree was decorated WWII veteran, avid bowler

A funeral service will be held Saturday for John Kenneth Urey, 18 College Ave., Apartment 1, Greenville, formerly of Mercer. He died at 5:40 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, following a lengthy illness. He was 84.

Mr. Urey was born May 31, 1917, in Leesburg to James Edward Urey and Ethel Regina Wiesen Urey.

He attended Mercer High School and retired after 35 years as an assembler from Reznor -- a unit of Thomas & Betts Corp., Mercer.

Mr. Urey served with the U.S. Army Infantry 25th Field Artillery, 9th Battalion as a technician 5th grade from October 1941 through September 1945. He participated in many battles and campaigns including Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe and anti-submarine patrol for three months and four days in the Panama Canal Zone. Mr. Urey received two decorations and citations, the American Defense Service Medal and the American Defense Theater Service Medal with four Bronze Stars.

He and his wife were supervisors for the Mercer Area Teenage Canteen from December 1963 through September 1966.

Mr. Urey bowled in numerous leagues including Mercer, Hickory, Sharpsville and New Smyrna bowling leagues.

He was of the Methodist faith and belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6345 in Mercer, as well as the New Smyrna post.

Mr. Urey enjoyed fishing and reading.

After his retirement from Reznor's, they moved to Edgewater, Fla., where they lived for the next 10 years. Due to his illness, they returned last September to Pennsylvania, taking up residence in Greenville.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Mary Rinamon, whom he married Dec. 5, 1945, at the residence; two sons, Gerald "Jerry" Shannon Urey and his wife Judith, Chicago; and John Winner Urey and his wife Amy, Greenville; one sister, Rowena June Hydu, Clearwater, Fla.; five grandsons and their spouses, Christian Gary and Carrie Urey; and Terry Lee and Barbara Urey, all Chicago; Jasson Winner Urey and Marli Urey; Ein Allen and Cori Urey; and Joel Isaac Urey, all Greenville; one great-grandson, Marcus Urey, Greenville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, James E. Urey and Howard W. Urey.

Anna Miklos Makara

St. John's C-R Orthodox member was former waitress

Anna Miklos Makara, 411 Negley St., Farrell, died at 8:40 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a brief illness. She was 92.

Mrs. Makara was born June 7, 1909, in Komarjani-Zemplinska, Austria, Hungary, to Michael and Mary Tkachs Miklos.

She attended Sharon schools and was a small crane operator during the war years for the former Carnegie Steel Co. in Farrell.

Mrs. Makara was also a former waitress at Yankee Lake Ballroom in Brookfield and at various other restaurants.

She was a member of St. John's Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church in Sharon.

She enjoyed playing cards and was a very affectionate, loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Her husband, Joseph Makara Sr., whom she married May 11, 1925, died Jan. 13, 1985.

Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Mary) Purash, New Wilmington; and Rosalie Myer, Hermitage; one daughter-in-law, Margaret Makara, Hermitage; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Makara was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Margaret Solyan; two brothers, John Miklos and Michael Miklos Jr.; one son, Joseph Makara Jr.; one granddaughter; two grandsons; and two great-grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Charity Fund or to the Cemetery Fund, both of St. John's Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church, 725 Cedar Ave., Sharon 16146.

Theodore Zipay

WWII veteran was founding partner in Sharon business

WARREN, Ohio -- A funeral service will be held Friday for Theodore Zipay, 835 Adams Ave., Warren, Ohio, formerly of Sharon. He died at 5:38 p.m. Monday, March 11, 2002, in Trumbull Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was 80.

Mr. Zipay was born March 26, 1921, in Sharon to Nicholas Zipay and Anna Majdan Zipay.

A graduate of Sharon High School Class of 1940, he was a founding partner in Zipay Brothers Roofing & Heating on Budd Street in Sharon. Mr. Zipay retired in 1984 from the City of Lakewood, Ohio, where he worked for 10 years. He later was a maintenance mechanic for American Greetings in Cleveland.

He was a lifelong member of Slovak Sokol Gymnastics Union Lodge 103 in Farrell.

An Army veteran, Mr. Zipay served as a private first class in the Pacific theater of operations during World War II.

He enjoyed golfing, reading and watching sports.

Surviving are: two sisters, Emily Zipay and Matilda Weisenborn, both Sharon; two brothers, Edward Zipay, Farrell; and Nicholas Zipay, Lorain, Ohio; 14 nieces and nephews; 22 great-nieces and -nephews; and eight great-great-nieces and -nephews.

Mr. Zipay was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John, George and Mike Zipay; and two sisters, Ann Holobiak and Alice White.

Irvine 'Gunnar' Chotlos

Sharon native was WWII vet, longtime Ohio teacher, coach

NEWARK, Ohio -- Retired U.S. First Lt. Irvine "Gunnar" Chotlos, Newark, Ohio, formerly of Granville, Ohio; and Sharon, died at 11:53 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2002, in his residence. He was 77.

Mr. Chotlos was born April 24, 1924, in Sharon to the late Paul and Ann Choklos Chotlos.

Mr. Chotlos, who was employed by the Granville Exempted Village School District, was a teacher at Granville High School from 1951 to 1987.

Mr. Chotlos was a 1942 graduate of Sharon High School and during World War II served with the U.S. Army in the North African, China, Burma and India theaters of operation. Following World War II, he served in the Ohio National Guard from 1953-74.

After World War II, he attended the Shenango campus of Pennsylvania State University in Sharon. In 1951, he graduated from Marietta (Ohio) College, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, having earned a bachelor's degree in education. In 1962, he received his master's degree in education from Ohio State University, Columbus.

During his 37 years as a teacher at Granville, he coached the tennis team in 1953 and golf team from 1962-80. His golf teams won 19 Licking County League championships and advanced three times to the state finals. He was selected 14 times as the Licking County League "Golf Coach of the Year."

In 1981, he was inducted into the Licking County League Hall of Fame and the Ohio State Golf Coaches Hall of Fame. In 1993, he was inducted into the Granville High School Hall of Fame. Following four years as official scorekeeper for Marietta College basketball games, he served for 36 years as official scorekeeper for Granville High School basketball games. In 1987, he was recognized as an honorary graduate of Granville High School.

Mr. Chotlos was a former publicity director for the Middle Buckeye Conference, former sports writer for The Ohio State Lantern, and former sports correspondent for The Advocate in Newark and for The Columbus Dispatch.

Mr. Chotlos was a former member of the Granville Village Council from 1963-66, and Granville Charter Commission from 1963-64.

Mr. Chotlos was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church; American Legion Post 398 in Granville; Granville Historical Society; Phi Alpha Theta Fraternity; and Omicron Delta Kappa Fraternity. He was a past president of the Granville 20-30 Club.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Charlotte Hawn, whom he married Aug. 30, 1950; a daughter, Elaine Ann Chotlos and her companion, Rance Hutchins, Kirtland, Ohio; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul Hawn Chotlos and Debra Chotlos, Madison, Wis.; his grandchildren, Anna Nicole Chotlos, Nathaniel Paul Chotlos and Matthew Quinn Chotlos, all Madison; his sisters, Betty Mondok and Mary Billen, both Sharon; and Sylvia Felton, Salem, Ohio; his sisters-in-law, Betty Lou Chotlos, Hermitage; and Roberta Chotlos, Topeka, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Rella Yost, Olympia Mansell and Della Steiby; and three brothers, Paul Chotlos II, George Chotlos and Dr. John Chotlos.

Sandra L. Winner

Former Valley View worker was '58 Sharpsville graduate

Sandra L. Winner of 591 Brookfield Ave., Masury, died at 6:31 p.m. Monday (3-11-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 61.

Mrs. Winner was born Aug. 6, 1940, in Sharon, a daughter of Kenneth and Blanche Clark Fette.

Following graduation from Sharpsville High School in 1958, Sandra worked as a warehouse supervisor for Valley View Department Store in Brookfield until the store's closing.

In her spare time, she enjoyed camping with her family, traveling and going to Las Vegas. She also was a NASCAR enthusiast.

Survivors include: her husband, William C. Winner, whom she married Sept. 18, 1965; two daughters, Pamela Moder, West Middlesex; and Dawn Winner, Masury; three sons, Bill Winner and Gary Winner, both Masury; and Shawn Winner, Sharon; two stepdaughters, Diane Sexton, Brookfield; and Tina Zarella, Wooster, Ohio; two brothers, William K. Fette and Harold Fette; and one sister, Donna Gregory, all Sharon; 14 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Mrs. Winner was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Andrew Moder; and one sister, Shirley Christy.

Thelma I. Christy

Retired cook at Holiday Inn formerly lived in Reynolds

WAYNESBORO, Va. -- A funeral service will be held Friday for Thelma I. Christy, 1641 Wickham Lane, Apartment 109, Waynesboro, formerly of Reynolds. She died at 7:20 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2002, in her residence after an extended illness. She was 72.

Mrs. Christy was born Jan. 8, 1930, in Volant to Stephen Duffy Sr. and Violet Adams Duffy.

She retired in 1977 after 22 years as a cook at the former Holiday Inn of Sharon in Hermitage.

Mrs. Christy was of the Baptist faith and loved doing embroidery work and crocheting.

She was an avid fan of WWF wrestling and enjoyed camping and volunteering with the elderly.

Her husband, Albert H. Christy Sr., whom she married April 8, 1950, died Aug. 31, 1980.

Surviving are: eight daughters, Mrs. Donald (Sandra) Kirkwood, Wampum; Mrs. Joseph (Linda) Bowser, Mrs. Michael (Diana) Hughes and Mrs. Harold (Marilyn) Taylor, all West Middlesex; Mrs. James (Janet) Phillips, Reynolds; Mrs. Kenneth (Joyce) Graban, Hubbard; Mrs. Ben (Karen) Esposito, Farrell; and Cindy Porterfield, Erie; three sons, Albert Christy Jr., Crimora, Va.; Alvin Christy, Waynesboro; and Thomas Christy and his wife Michelle, Austintown, Ohio; one sister, Sara Williams, Farrell; one brother, Alvin Baker and his wife Dorothy, New Castle; 26 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Christy was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, four sisters and two infant children.
