BROOKFIELD

Local man jailed after drug sweep in Lawrence Cty.

A Brookfield man was arrested March 7 in a Lawrence County drug sweep that included the arrests of 17 people, police said.

Anthony George Schmidt, 45, of 1162 E. Park Drive, was charged with possession and delivery of crack cocaine and criminal use of a phone or pager, police said.

He was sent to Lawrence County Jail after failing to post $1,000 bond. A court official said he remained in jail this morning.

Schmidt's preliminary hearing is set for Friday.

If convicted, he faces up to 5 years in jail and a $10,000 fine for the drug charge and up to 2 years and a $5,000 fine for the phone-use charge, said Lawrence County District Attorney Matthew T. Mangino.

The drug sweep was part of an ongoing investigation involving the New Castle Police Narcotics Bureau, Lawrence County District Attorney's Drug Task Force and the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General.
