United Way reports successful campaign

Despite pressure from a bad economy and the Sept. 11 attacks, the Northern Mercer County United Way had a successful 2001 campaign, according to Executive Director Kelly Turcic.

The organization set a $230,000 goal for the year, and so far has collected $229,500, Ms. Turcic said. She said she is expecting more money to come in Monday from a special project.

An intern at the agency has been working since January to get all of the students at Thiel College, Greenville, to participate in the United Way campaign, Ms. Turcic said.

"It looks like we're going to meet our goal," Ms. Turcic said. She added that the agency received some unexpected donations from businesses and other contributors.

The Northern Mercer County United Way funds 15 agencies, including the American Red Cross, the Greenville Area Leisure Services Association, the Literacy Council and Catholic Charities.
