SHARON

School security concerns aired

A Sharon school director is asking his fellow board members to consider beefed up security at all the schools since directors are going to look into renovations at Case Avenue Elementary.

Dominick Russo said in February that he wants to see more security in the buildings and suggested cameras and an alert system for the doors. He said he is concerned about the lack of money that has gone into security at the schools.

Directors were presented Wednesday with a preliminary estimate of $7.5 million in construction costs for Case Avenue Elementary. The costs include design fees, asbestos removal, furniture, restroom renovations, kitchen equipment, electrical renovations, heating, ventilation and air conditioning renovations and plumbing renovations.

Superintendent Richard A. Rossi asked directors to review the estimates for further discussion in the near future.

Russo said not only does he want to see better security at Case and the high school, which is under renovation, but he would like to go back to the already renovated West Hill and C.M. Musser elementaries and increase the security.

Director Kathy Hall said she is also worried about security at the high school at night. She said she walked into the commons area of the high school at night for a meeting and there was no one around.

Anyone could walk into the school and hide in the building or bring hazardous material or a weapon into the building in the evening and no one is there to stop them, Mrs. Hall said.

Rossi said he would look into several possibilities, including hiring a night security guard and talking to night maintenance staff about making themselves visible in the commons area of the building.

Directors are also planning to tour the newly renovated Hickory High School in Hermitage to see their new security system, which includes 45 cameras, Russo said.
