FARRELL, SHARON

Police departments' 'weed' patrols netted fewer arrests in February

Extra police patrols in Farrell and Sharon, initiated under the state Weed and Seed community-revitalization program, netted fewer arrests in February than they did the previous two months.

Mercer County Assistant District Attorney Robert Kochems, the law enforcement coordinator, said that shows the patrols are continuing to reduce street-level crime.

In February, 28 Weed and Seed patrols were scheduled outside of the normal patrolling and investigative duties of the departments.

The patrols stopped 27 vehicles for traffic violations, and issued 18 citations for charges more serious than traffic offenses, Kochems said.

Thirteen of the citations were for driving with a suspended license or driving without a license. Two people were arrested on warrants charging them with more serious offenses from previous incidents.

In January, police made 89 stops, which led to 30 more serious charges. Seventy traffic stops were made in December, resulting in 35 more serious charges.

The patrols in February also made 11 warrant arrests and nine other arrests. Three of the arrests were for new charges when the people were picked up on warrants.

Three people were cited for public drunkenness, and a juvenile was cited for a curfew violation.

Police made only 10 arrests in January, but 46 -- 25 of them on warrants -- in December.

Police also walked through bars and patrolled on foot.
