Sewer line-repair bids come in on target
Bids to replace a deteriorated sewer line in Farrell came in on target Monday, city officials said.
The city accepted bids to replace an 8-inch main line hooked into the Keiffer Road pump station.
The tile line is not old -- installed in the mid-'70s -- but is deteriorating and city workers have had to fix breaks five times, said Jim Branca, sewer plant superintendent.
Consultant Dan Goncz of Gannett Fleming Inc., Pittsburgh, believes the make-up of soil in the area is causing the line to deteriorate, Branca said.
The city put out two sets of specifications, one to replace 740 feet of line between South Judy Lynn Drive and North Judy Lynn, and the other to replace a 400-foot section. The new line would be made of plastic.
Goncz recommended that the city replace the longer section, said City Manager LaVon Saternow. By the bids that came in, it looks like the city will be able to do that, she said.
"The two low bids are right in the ballpark with what the engineer projected," she said.
The low bids were from Utility Contracting Inc., Youngstown, $19,300 for the 400-foot section and $33,800 for the 740-foot section.
The other favorable bids were from David Construction Co., Hermitage, at $20,899 and $35,337 respectively.
Two other bids also were opened Monday.
Council tabled the bids and will award a contract later.
