Five boys and three girls are expected to face charges in juvenile court for participating in the brawl that erupted Feb. 2 at a Sharon-Farrell high school basketball game, Sharon police said.

All of the juveniles petitioned to court were from Farrell, with the exception of a 17-year-old Sharon girl, police said.

Charges against the juveniles -- ages 12 to 17 -- range from aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest or other law enforcement, failure to disperse by official order and disorderly conduct, police said.

The only student charged with aggravated assault was a 15-year-old Farrell girl, police said.

Students who were charged with resisting arrest or other law enforcement weren't necessarily being arrested when they tried to deter police, said Sharon Police Capt. Michael Menster.

The charge can be applied to someone who interferes with the arrest of another person or the duties of police, Menster said.

Though police filed the petitions Monday, the students are not officially charged until juvenile probation completes the process, police said.

Police expect to charge some adults soon, and there may be a few more juveniles charged, they said.

The brawl started as a fight between a boy and a girl, one from Sharon and one from Farrell, in the student section of the stands in Sharon High School's gymnasium.

As police made their way into the crowd, the fight quickly escalated into an all-out melee. Police reported being pummeled and hit by people in the crowd and felt people grabbing at their equipment belts.

District Attorney James P. Epstein said Thursday it took some time to complete the investigation due to the number of people involved. Epstein said more than 100 people were interviewed.

Accusations of police misconduct also added to the length of the investigation, Epstein said. The investigation showed the police "acted in good faith," he said.

The only adult charged so far is Jesse J. "J.J." Wilson, 20, of 709 Sherman Ave., Sharon. Wilson pleaded guilty March 21 to resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
