BROOKFIELD

Local man's drug charge hearing continued

The preliminary hearing for a Brookfield man arrested in a Lawrence County drug sweep has been continued from March 15 to this Friday.

Anthony George Schmidt, 45, of 1162 E. Park Drive, is charged with possession and delivery of crack cocaine and criminal use of a phone or pager.

The hearing was continued because Schmidt's attorney, William Panella of New Castle, had a scheduling conflict, a court official said.

If convicted, Schmidt faces up to 5 years in jail and a $10,000 fine for the drug charge and up to 2 years and a $5,000 fine for the phone-use charge, said Lawrence County District Attorney Matthew T. Mangino.

The drug sweep, which included the arrests of 17 people, was part of an ongoing investigation involving the New Castle Police Narcotics Bureau, Lawrence County District Attorney's Drug Task Force and the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General.
