Yost pleads guilty to burglary charge

A Pulaski man who helped with an April 13 burglary in Vernon Township, Trumbull County, then was a passenger in a car that led police on a two-state chase and ended with a crash in Wheatland has entered a plea to Trumbull charges.

Josh Yost, 21, of 215 Beechwood Blvd., pleaded guilty to a charge of burglary Thursday, said a spokeswoman for Common Pleas Court Judge Peter Kontos.

A charge of theft was dropped.

The judge ordered that a pre-sentencing investigation be conducted, but has not set a sentencing date, she said.

Yost was the lookout for Matthew Henry, 21, of 45 Dutch Lane, Hermitage, in the burglary, police said. Yost helped Henry load a television, tables, videocassette recorders, jewelry and other items that Henry had stolen from the home into a car, police said.

Henry needed money and came up with the idea of the burglary, police said. He smashed a window with a piece of wood to get inside the Vernon home, police said.

A neighbor spotted the men coming out of the house and called police. A sheriff's deputy spotted the car, which Henry was driving, and pursued the car, police said. Several other departments joined the pursuit, police said.

The chase reached speeds in excess of 100 mph, and the Henry-driven car, which Yost had rented, sideswiped cars on Rombold Road and Mercer Avenue in Hermitage before smashing into two cars at Broadway and Mercer avenues in Wheatland, police said.

Two Youngstown people in a car that flipped over from the impact were treated at a local hospital.

Henry ran from the crashed car but was captured shortly afterward when a Hartford patrolman who had followed the pair drew his gun and ordered him to stop, police said.

Yost stayed in the car until police arrived, police said.

Henry was indicted Feb. 19 on charges of burglary, theft and failure to comply. He has pleaded not guilty and waived his right to a speedy trial. Trial is set for Sept. 23 before Judge John M. Stuard.

In Mercer County Common Pleas Court, Henry pleaded guilty in August to a charge of receiving stolen property. Judge Thomas R. Dobson fined him $400 and sentenced him to 36 months' probation.

Yost, formerly of Sharon, pleaded guilty in December to receiving stolen property and conspiracy to commit receiving stolen property. Dobson sentenced him to parole after a mental health evaluation for the remainder of one month to 12 months, and 18 months' probation.
