GREENVILLE

Ready or not, playing fields draw kids

If you build it they will come. Heck, they'll come before you even finish building it.

Kids are already using some of the fields at the Greenville sports complex in West Salem Township.

Although the project is 16 months behind schedule, approaching $400,000 over budget and riddled with problems that must be fixed, young people and some parents have been flocking to fields at the 42-acre site this week to prepare for the upcoming summer soccer and softball seasons.

"Although the fields still need rolled and cut, I don't blame them for using the fields," said Erik Bielata, executive director of the Greenville Area Leisure Services Association.

Bielata said that, to his knowledge, the activity at the complex was not sanctioned but organized by local coaches and parents.

Borough solicitor Warren Keck III said he did not see a legal problem with the fields being used, despite the fact that the project is not completed.

In the event of serious injury during the unsanctioned play, Keck said he believed the borough's insurance would be good at the site, as it is at all places owned or leased by the borough.

Borough officials have said the fields should be ready for youth league play by next month. Work at the unfinished complex has been on hold since officials discovered problems at the site over the winter, and they have been meeting with the project designer and planner and contractors for past four weeks to try to resolve the problems.

Officials met Wednesday with Pashek & Associates, the Pittsburgh-based planner and designer, to iron out contractors' remaining responsibilities, Bielata said.

The borough plans to send certified letters outlining those responsibilities to the contractors who have work left to do, and work should resume within two weeks, Bielata said.
