GREENVILLE

Festival will help raise cash

Members of the Greenville business community may get a chance this summer to drag borough officials through the mud.

One of the marquee events planned for this summer's Riverside Park Festival is a tug of war over the Shenango River, according to Greenville Area Preservation Association members.

The association is organizing the festival, which is set from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 15 and noon to 5 p.m. June 16 in the park.

Lorrie Smith, spokeswoman for the group, said she wants to stage a tug-of-war showdown over a stretch of the river with muddy banks.

She said the event would pit members of the local business community against borough officials. Each team would have 10 to 12 people, but teams have not been set, she said.

Other planned events include helicopter ambulance landings on the baseball field, wagon rides through the park and musical performances and other entertainment by local talent.

Money will be generated at booths and stands set up throughout the park by local businesses, food and merchandise vendors and crafters, Mrs. Smith said. All of the money not used for the association's festival costs will go toward bettering the borough, she said. Greenville is about $1.1 million in debt.

"We are confident that there will be something for everyone," Mrs. Smith said of the festival activities.
