Felbaum appeals sentence in castration death

BUTLER -- A transsexual woman has appealed the prison sentence she received after the castration death of her husband last year.

Tammy Felbaum, 43, was sentenced in February to 5 1/2 to 11 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault. She could have received up to 20 years under state guidelines.

Prosecutors said James Felbaum, 40, Tammy's sixth husband, died from a combination of the pain of a castration performed by Tammy Felbaum and the effects of the painkiller OxyContin. The Mercer County coroner said Felbaum choked on his own vomit.

Relatives testified Felbaum had repeatedly threatened to castrate her husband if he ever cheated on her. An ex-husband also testified that Felbaum had helped perform a similar operation on him in 1983.

During the December trial, Felbaum testified she castrated herself two decades ago, and that her husband performed a similar operation himself.
