STONEBORO

Two dogs die, three survive house fire

Two dogs died and a downtown Stoneboro street was closed for more than two hours as Stoneboro volunteer firefighters, assisted by three other companies, put out a fire in a home on the same street as their station.

A two-and-a-half story house at 43 Linden Street owned by Rodney Downing burned, causing between $30,000 to $50,000 worth of damage, said Fire Chief Rick Reither. He said he thought the home was not a total loss.

The department was able to save three other dogs by locating them with the company's thermal imaging camera, he said.

No people were home at the time of the fire, Reither said, adding that the state fire marshall is investigating the cause of the blaze.

Stoneboro Volunteer Fire Company was assisted by Sandy Lake Fire-Rescue, Pine Township Engine Company, and Jackson Center Volunteer Fire Company.
