William J. Joyce Attorney won Purple Heart, served his community William J. Joyce, 621 Leona St., Sharpsville, passed away Friday afternoon, April 19, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 82. Mr. Joyce was born on Jan. 10, 1920, in Sharpsville, where he lived his entire life. He was a son of John Joyce and Jeanette Milliron Joyce. He graduated from Sharpsville High School in 1938 as valedictorian, and from Geneva College, Beaver Falls, in 1942, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Economics. He was captain of the 1941 Geneva College football team. Mr. Joyce enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and became a commissioned naval officer after undergoing a training program. He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of operation in World War II, and was discharged from military service in April of 1946, at which time he held the rank of lieutenant senior grade. Mr. Joyce received a Purple Heart for wounds suffered while serving aboard a gunboat operating in the Palau Islands in the Pacific. He entered law school at the University of Pittsburgh in 1946, after being discharged from military service, and received a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1949. Mr. Joyce then joined the law firm of Wiesen, Cusick and Madden as an associate, and later became a partner of the law firm of Wiesen, Cusick, Madden, Joyce, Acker and McKay, which later became known as Cusick, Madden, Joyce and McKay. He retired from that firm in September of 1995. In the practice of law, Mr. Joyce served as Sharpsville Borough solicitor for a continuous period of more than 38 years, beginning in 1950. He also served as solicitor for the county of Mercer and for several townships including Pymatuning and Shenango. In addition, he served as a solicitor for the Mercer County Industrial Development Authority and the Upper Shenango Valley Water Pollution Control Authority. Mr. Joyce served several years as a member of the Board of Directors of Protected Home Mutual Life Insurance Company in Sharon, and as legal counsel to that company. He was a member of the American, Pennsylvania and Mercer County Bar associations and had served his turn as president of the Mercer County Bar Association. Mr. Joyce served several terms as a member of the board of Mercer County Community Counseling Center, and for a number of years, on the Budget Committee of the United Way. Mr. Joyce was a lifelong member of St. Bartholomew's Church in Sharpsville; and belonged to Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 103, Sharon; Sharpsville Service Club; and American Legion Post 162, Sharpsville. He is survived by: his wife, the former Mary Ellen Miller, whom he married on June 14, 1947, in Church of the Sacred Heart in Sharon; and by four sons, William Joyce, Oakland, Calif.; Peter Joyce, Sharpsville; John Joyce, Bridgeville, Pa.; and James Joyce and his wife Paulette, Emsworth, Pa. Mr. Joyce was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret "Peggy" Joyce; a brother, John Joyce; and a sister, Jane Tinnemeyer. JOYCE Myrna Mae Sakey Myrna Mae Sakey, 3972 Blue Jay Drive, Sharpsville, died unexpectedly at 10:30 a.m. Saturday (4-20-02) in her home of natural causes. She was 62. Obituary information was incomplete.
SAKEY John F. Goodrum John F. Goodrum, 3499 Sharon Road, West Middlesex, died at 11:50 p.m. Friday (4-19-02) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after a brief illness. He was 54. Obituary information was incomplete.
GOODRUM John Kropinak Farrell man was LTV retiree, served during Korean conflict John Kropinak, 1018 Roemer Blvd., Farrell, died at 10:55 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, following an extended illness. He was 70. Mr. Kropinak was born Dec. 21, 1931, in Helvitia, Pa., to Matthew Kropinak and Katherine Evancho Kropinak. He attended high school in Campbell, Ohio, and worked as a welder for LTV Steel of Youngstown for 21 years. Mr. Kropinak retired in 1975. He was a former member of St. Patrick's Church in Hubbard. Mr. Kropinak served in the Army during the Korean conflict. He enjoyed his home. Surviving are: his companion, Betty Rainey, whom he made his home with for the past 24 years; three daughters, Mrs. Renn (Martha) Griffin, Tennessee; Tina Rainey, Virginia; and Mrs. Glenn (Mary Ellen Roshala) Palmer, Cleveland; a son, William Rainey, Arizona; four grandchildren, Trey Griffin and Morgan Griffin, both Tennessee; and Cory Smith and Amanda Smith, both Cleveland; five nephews, one of whom he raised, Michael Kropinak; and two nieces. Mr. Kropinak was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Kotch and Olga Kropinak; and one brother, Michael Kropinak.
KROPINAK Michael Cummerick Crane operator retired after 45 years from Sharon Steel WARREN, Ohio -- A funeral service will be held Tuesday for Michael Cummerick, Ridgecrest Care Center, Warren, formerly of 140 Boyd Drive, Hermitage. He died at 11:25 a.m. Thursday (4-18-02) in Trumbull Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. He was 92. Mr. Cummerick was born Sept. 10, 1909, in Farrell to George Cummerick and Susan Jurcich Cummerick. He attended Farrell schools and retired in 1975 after 45 years of employment at the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, where he was a crane operator. Mr. Cummerick was a member of Living Lord Lutheran Church in Warren, and was a former member of Sts. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church in Sharon. His wife, the former Suzanne Grexa, whom he married July 30, 1950, is deceased. Surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Dona) Cummings, Warren; and three grandchildren, Cassandra, Rex and Rory Cummings. Besides his wife, Mr. Cummerick was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Helen and Mary Cummerick; and Ann Meszaros; and three brothers, Joseph, George and Stephen Cummerick. Memorial contributions may be made to Living Lord Lutheran Church, 851 Niles-Cortland Road, Warren, Ohio 44484; or through the funeral home to the church.
CUMMERICK Pearl E. Matthews Bodendorfer New Castle woman was retired bookkeeper NEW CASTLE -- Pearl E. Matthews Bodendorfer, New Castle RD1, died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2002, in the hospital of Jameson Health System. She was 88. Mrs. Bodendorfer was born Feb. 28, 1914, in New Castle to H. Clair Matthews and Ella M. McConnell Matthews. She was a graduate of New Castle High School and retired as a bookkeeper. Mrs. Bodendorfer was a member of Eintracht Women's Club; and Epworth Methodist Church, both in New Castle. Her husband, John W. Bodendorfer, whom she married May 25, 1932, died Aug. 23, 1990. Surviving are: five daughters, Arlene J. Calhoun, New Castle; Ruth B. Kirk, New Wilmington; Donna J. Grimm, Volant; Joan C. Hummel, Mount Holly, N.J.; and Henrietta Danielson, Hermitage; one sister, Erma J. Shidledecker, New Castle; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Bodendorfer was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Finley Matthews; and two sisters, Hazel Holsaphal and Ida Grace Matthews.
