Soil test shows site in city OK

Mercer County Disabilities Commission will not run into the same problem with soil that sunk a site Mercer County Community Action had hoped to build an apartment complex on.

The coalition wants to build a 16-apartment assisted living center for people with disabilities along Federal between Fruit Avenue and Union Street.

About three years ago, the coalition had the same kind of test done that the agency did on its site, and the results showed the soil was fine, said Co-Executive Director Cheryl O'Connell.

The coalition, which does not have funding for the project, has had an option on the city-owned land since 1998.

Community Action has pulled out of a plan to build 10 apartments at Hamilton Avenue between Federal Street and Union streets because the soil was not suitable to build on, and additional testing would drive up the cost, officials said.

The agency is looking at sites elsewhere in Farrell.
