GREENVILLE

Camper fire blamed on smoker

Fire destroyed an abandoned camper in the 100 block of South Second Street in Greenville Wednesday.

Greenville Fire Chief Steve Thompson said the accidental fire was caused by careless smoking.

Thompson said a neighbor had been smoking cigarettes in the camper at 108 S. Second St.; the camper is owned by Ed Fisher of 16 Plum St. The abandoned camper was not insured and of "minimal value," Thompson said.

Firefighters were called at 4:50 p.m. and the first pumper arrived 4 minutes later, Thompson said.

Thompson said no one was hurt and firefighters cleared the scene in about an hour. He said a fire hydrant 500 feet from the camper provided enough water to put out the blaze.

As a result of the increased water pressure in the pipes needed to feed the hoses, some residents on the west side of town said their tap water was brown Wednesday evening.
