MERCER COUNTY

Environmental education gets $25,000 plus from the state

The state awarded more than $25,000 in state grants to support environmental education in Mercer County, a state legislator said Tuesday.

The funds come from the state's Environmental Education Grant Program, which is administered by the state Department of Environmental Protection, according to a news release from state Sen. Robert D. "Bob" Robbins, R-50.

The grants are:

  • $15,000 to Farrell Area School District to provide teachers with resources to integrate and assess student performance in environment and ecology academic standards.

  • $9,922 to Mercer County Conservation District to offer a five-day teacher workshop at Munnell Run Farm in Coolspring Township.

Workshop topics will include new farming techniques, pollution reduction and pest control.

  • $1,000 to Mercer Area School District to support Mercer Junior-Senior High School's training efforts by providing resources, including educational materials, transportation funding or teacher stipends; and $1,000 to the Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV for the same purpose.
