Father's Day car show detoured by roadwork

The Shenango Valley Mall parking lot will be the site of the 20th annual Father's Day Car Show in June.

The event, which traditionally takes place on East State Street in Hermitage, had to be moved because of road construction related to the widening of North Hermitage Road and repaving of East State Street.

"We expect there to be at least 600 cars," said Fred Ross, president of the Shenango Valley Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America, which sponsors the event.

The June 16 car show will be held in the mall's north and east parking lots -- behind Sears around to the front of Kauffman's and part of a plaza parking lot near State Street.

Road construction moved the annual automobile show to the mall in 1995 when South Hermitage Road was widened into five lanes from State Street to West Middlesex.

The car show stayed at the mall in 1996 because it had worked out so well, according to Ross, but the second year the large event at the south side of the mall had some problems with traffic, so the car club decided to take it back to East State Street.

The group expects about 15,000 spectators this year, Ross said.
